Keeps my i5-7500 really cool. Idle temp is around 28C. Still under 60C while gaming. Lighting effects are fun and easy to change.
My 7700k never goes above 60deg (at about 85% load) and idles at 32c. I am planning a custom loop, else I'd have bought the 280mm. The trick is finding cases that work with these.
This fits well in the Thermaltake Tower 900 in the top.
UPDATE.. Pump failed 2 months in. Apparently a common problem... Buying a Corsair and screaming at NzXT
UPDATE 2: NZXT took a while to respond, but did replace the item after about 2 weeks. They offered to send me one before I shipped out my bad one, at a cost; which they would have refunded once the bad cooler arrived.
I'm putting it on a shelf. Not sure if I can trust it.
First off, the hoses are softer and more flexible than the Corsair ones plus it can pivot 180 degrees on the pump outlets which is great. This allows the hoses to be aligned and routed in all sorts of ways without causing stress on the outlets. This is perfect for me as I am trying to fit this cooler into a Micro ATX case. I do have to point out that the x42's hoses are small in diameter compared to say Corsair's H100i v2.
The LED pump head with it's cool looking glass mirrors creates a awsome looking effect.
The CAM third party software to control the pump and the fans for the cooler is user friendly and very easy to use. As of right now the amount of customization is ok, but I wish it allows even more choices for the Pump and Fan control settings.
*****Update 05/29/2017*****
After doing a BURN test for 15 minutes on Aida64 the max temps on my CPU was 70C. Regular stress test on Aida only brought my temps only up to 60C and during like 1 hour of gaming my temps only reached 57C. This is pretty nice considering I have my 6700k overclocked to 4.6 Ghz.
Now the CAM software that is used to control everything on this cooler is not working properly for me or I just don't how to use it. I can control fans and pump speeds perfectly fine. When I tried to change the colors on LEDs on the pump head it doesn't work. The colors is always stuck to a default blue and the options to add more colors to my settings are non responsive when I click on them. CAM also seems to intervere or conflicts with MSI Afterbuner and Riva Tuner. My Afterburner O/C settings don't apply when my PC starts up, I have to manual apply them every time every time I start up my PC.
*****Update 06/01/2017*****
The CAM software that's used to run the pump and fans is becoming a bit troublesome. For whatever reason, sometimes it won't save any of my LED, Fan, and Pump settings. It'll revert everything back to default at random times and I'm sure what's going on. The program also sometimes fails to recognize my Kraken x42 as in like completely not even registering in CAM. On top of the fact that CAM already interferes with MSI Afterburner this program is starting to be more trouble than it's worth.
*****Update 06/06/2017*****
I'm going to drop two stars from this product. The fans and I believe the pump is only controlled by the CAM software and there is no hardware level software/firmware that can automatically run the fans and the pump during pre boot of the OS. That means the fans and pumps are not running if one was to do something else with the computer that does not require booting into the OS. Just things like say installing a new OS or doing some OS repairs outside the system and the fan and pump will not be running.
I'm running into some real issues on where the CAM software repeatedly does not load the Kraken drivers or for whatever reason CAM won't start properly. I have at times received a temperature warning notification from my Real Temp program telling me that my overclocked CPU has hit beyond 80C during gaming only to find out the fans and pumps were not running. This becomes a real PITA when I have to check to see if my AIO is up and running every time I turn on my computer.
I have noticed that if I completely shut down and not restart my computer the fans stop on the next power up. If I restart the computer however the fans continue to run. I feel like the hardware on the pump loses the settings or memory during a complete computer shut down.
*****Update 06/09/2017*****
On this date, NZXT released version 3.3.2 of the CAM software. The change logs said they fixed all the issues I just mention above so we shall see if this is true.
*****Update 06/12/2017*****
Nope, the new version of CAM did not fix any of the previous issues but they just seem to happen less frequent now sooo I guess this is progress?
*****update 06/18/2017*****
Hmm, they release another version of CAM 3.3.3 and it says they have finally fixed all the driver and setting issues, for reals this time.
*****Update 06/21/2017*****
Yay, I can confirm that all the issues plaguing the CAM software are pretty much gone. CAM now saves and holds settings for all my LED, fan, and pump. The settings no longer reset to defaults after computer shutdowns and CAM no longer has any issues seeing my Kraken x42. I am however still only going to give the x42 3 stars because I feel it has one major design flaw. The only other thing holding me back from giving this a 5 star is because the new second generation Kraken AIO liquid coolers only run the fans and pump when you run the CAM software. The fans and pump will not run during pre-boot of the OS and continue to not run even when you're in the OS unless you start CAM. This makes really no sense, IMO
