MSI's Budget Friendly X470 is really quite good

MSI's Budget Friendly X470 is really quite good
It’s obvious from the moment you first open the box of the MSI X470 Gaming Pro that keeping costs down was a priority and that is good if you are looking for a X470 chipset motherboard on a budget. It’s not a bad looker either. The black and red aesthetics, I/O cover and integrated LEDs round this motherboard off nicely. At the end of the day, MSI has delivered an X470 motherboard that performs just as well as the rest, for a remarkably low price. Despite such a rock-bottom price tag, most of the basic features you’ll find elsewhere are all present and accounted for.The ATX layout has allowed MSI to fit three full-length PCIe x16 lanes, though only one of these has steel reinforcement, whereas you will find some of the competitors have the top two reinforced to stop GPU sag if you’re running SLI or CrossFire. Squeezed between these are three more PCIe x1 lanes, but like most boards, you’ll lose physical access to those nearest the full-length lanes if you fit a dual-slot card.It may not be designed for tweakers, yet MSI has included the optional 4-pin CPU power connector alongside the traditional 8-pin CPU, which should deliver even more stable power for AMD’s multicored behemoths. You do not have to connect power to the 4-pin but you may want to for higher-end AMD CPU overclocking. (i.e. X-Series) Twin M.2 slots are included, though neither comes with a heat shield. As with the other boards, only the top can fit the longest M.2 size of 22110.Six SATA 3 ports is par for the course on the X470 at this price point, while the four memory slots are rated to handle memory speeds up to 3,466MHz thanks to the ‘DDR4 Boost’ design. One area where the price differential is noticeable is the onboard audio, which uses Realtek’s ageing ALC892 codec. This is rated to have an SNR of 95dB, which is substantially lower than the 120dB of the newer ALC1220 codec used on other boards. As a result, if you are looking for higher quality audio I would suggest popping in a decent soundcard to make up the difference.I will say connector positioning on this motherboard was well thought out allowing for fantasic cable management if you have a case that allows you to take advantage of it. I located a NZXT 500i on sale over the holidays and it is as if these two pieces of hardware were made for each other. Using MSI's Mystic Light software along side NZXT's CAM software for lighting put the finishing touches on my build. While there have been a few areas cut to keep the cost down, performance hasn’t suffered. My biggest "issue", personally, is the use of the ALC892 audio codec, which is noticeably inferior in practice to the ALC1220 codec. Of course, this is subjective and probably not an issue unless you are an audiophile and have your room kitted out with 5.1 or 7.1 surround. All in all, it is a quality motherboard at an affordable price and I would recommend. The only down-tick for me on the rating was on the audio for my particular setup. As stated previously, that is a subjective down-tick for me personally and you should consider this a 5 star board if you don't have concern over the use of the ALC892 codec.

I purchased this " on August 10, 2018 "
This is what i paid
$229.00

It's depressing here we are in late 2022, and i can't find a board w/ half the features on x570s, or the new am5 boards are all all 300+. It's now about october 2022, and this board is running great. I really love it.

Pros:

Memory compatibility, 3200 out of the box, no issues (UPC:751492606934) and ripjaw 5 "F4-3200C16D-16GVGB" MSI has already been strong on the memory front.

No issues with the board. I put in the Ryzen 2700x, plugged in the disks, and added ram power on no issues.
great bios features such as USB bios update, readable code on the board (must these days for debugging hardware issues), clear cmos button, though that seems to stick it into an overclock mode (which was the default for me as well when i installed it), which i don't like. I much prefer boards to start in conservative or manufacture suggested settings so the system boots, and hardware isn't damaged. I was especially annoyed seeing the voltage high.

tested both:
(RipJaw5 and Pny Anarchy)

I like the PCI express location being above the top video card. When they are all inter leaved it is quite hard to use them

I like quality of the board. All the connectors fit properly, and pins looked good. Everything was really stable and solid physically. No creaking or popping when plugging in things.

this board has probably among the best usb connectivity. it has 2 gen 3.1 headers and the micro header. A hear and a half later i am getting a ton more life out of this board adding peripherals.

If i hit any stability issues related to the board, i will absolutely update this. if anything on the board fails in the next few years i will update this. Been almost 2 years now zero problems. I actually like the click bios better than the original. It is lighter and simple, and MSI has stayed on top of their updates.

Clear cmos button placement outside of board on backpanel, is super convenient.
Cons

Some points:

1.) My take is the Cooling on the board could be better. I was underwhelmed with the VRM heat sinks. They are small . Just like side case fans i really wish we return to fin.

2.) Sata only 6 ports. I prefer 8. it is disappointing that a lot of boards are moving away from this. Fine i bought a an 8 port sata card, but with the lanes available you have to be choosy on am4

3.) two 8 pin connectors really only serve to cause confusion, but it's fine. It doesn't hurt anything.

4.) the digital code for the mother board is a bit hidden behind where you'd stick the second video card. Hard to read. I know a great place would have been to remove the second 8 pin connector, shift a couple things to the left and put this right up on the top of the board in the upper right corner where it won't be covered. I don't really want to harp on the power thing though because looking a head at 16 core they probably are thinking this is future proofing. that's actually pretty cool. Anyway upper right is the best place for the codes. i guess figure it out. :)

5.) M2 heat sync while supposed a huge feature of the board, seems overkill and 2 gpus would make it hard to open. But heat dissipation is iimportant, so cool

6.) Asus has really nice audio software. I feel this one isn't quite as nice. it doesn't seem to run in the start menu. i need to launch it. The software is useful because it detects impedance of headphones. In fact if there is a weak point my god msi. get some software engineers, and make your stuff feel less cheap software wise.

7.) msi software is horrid. you are paying for a premium board, and will struggle getting realtek audio to work properly is a bit of a let down. Sorry (duplicate of 6 but this is my biggest gripe) coming from ASUS that is the big draw back. Software.

overall i love this board. i'll probably stick with msi on my next build or maybe some other non tichai. auus has gotten too expensive. I really am a sucker for VRM (this has a good one) and think ti is worth paying for on amd platforms since you stick with the board so long. Boards have gotten too expensive in x570. In my opinion an amazing board should be 200 ( like this one). it has everything you can possibly need.

I honestly love everything about the X470 gaming m7 board. It took me around a week of researching all the boards out there, and this is the one that stood out.

The big selling points for me were the following.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Solid board construction with a great layout, look, and compatibility with ram that other boards have issues with.
- No obnoxious rgb. It's done tastefully, and can be added to easily if you want your room to glow.
- 12+2 power phase... this board is pure beastmode, and will have the power I need for the next ryzen series.
- No onboard video.. I just find it to be a waste when you're using a 1080ti.
- The wifi is a plus, sort of.. but I never use it.
- Rock solid vrm that stays cool.
- The bios isn't confusing, and is put together rather well.
- Better overclocking capability than other flagship boards from other companies.
- I've never had one issue with msi products in the past, so I tend to stick with what works.

If you are looking at the taichi or asus boards, give this one some serious consideration. It's cheaper than both of them, doesn't have gimmicky junk slapped on the board that you won't use, and I personally find it to be the best choice right now in the x470 line up.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cons:

My only real con is the built in wireless isn't very good.. But I never use it, so that doesn't bother me.

MSI did a great job with this x470 board, and I have zero regrets after buying it.

This review is for the flagship product, the X470 GAMING M7 AC.

This is a very solid board. It has no trouble at all with my Ryzen 2700x. While it has a number of overclock options, overclocking the Ryzen 2700x is a game of diminishing returns, and it is fast enough to not be worth it right now. This board has no issue with running my 3200 memory at 3400, which produces nearly the same performance gains as overclocking on the Ryzen.

Other thoughts:
* The dual M2 heatsink is nice.
* The number of RGB headers and RGB headers for corsair and other vendors is nice.
* The Mystic Light Software is very unfortunate and hard to use. It does a poor job of basic GUI work, like making the options not available grayed out, as well as doing a poor job of controlling corsair devices, making the corsair header unusable for now.
* On board power and reset are awesome.
* Plenty of fan headers, although it doesn't have high wattage fan headers like one of the Asus boards I looked at.
* Overclock "knob" worthless for 2700x
* Re-enforced PCIe is nice.
* Wireless AC and Bluetooth both work well.
* Did I mention how great the VRMs are on this thing?

I am very happy with the stability and performance of this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best value for X470 board
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 24, 2019

I've checked reviews, reddit threads and done my research before deciding to purchase this board. The one review here that gave it low rating is not justified. The board is great, works flawlessly and the only issue I had with it was that I could hear buzzing noise in headphones when playing graphically intensive games. Fixed that by removing the I/O plate from my case and the plastic piece above the I/O ports on the board. This was just a small caveat from such an excellent value board. The board has great VRM capabilities and unless you are planning to overclock 3900x you will not reach its limits.

The board was a great choice for me paired up with a Ryzen 5 2600X processor. I had a great gaming and multimedia experience on this motherboard along with a highly customisable BIOS settings and LED lighting effects.

Pros:
* X470 chipset (supports 2nd gen Ryzen processors out of the box)
* Mostly accurate on-board RGB lighting along with two 5050 RGB lighting headers.
* Everything.

Cons:
* No support for addressable RGB strips.

Great motherboard with decent power delivery and VRM's, from stock this board is very capable however lacks key offset features for clocks and voltages. however, after the latest bios update is applied the board now is on par in terms of features to competing boards. Board is stable and of medium-high spec quality with headroom for a decent overclock on my 2700x

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic Ryzen board
Reviewed in Canada on January 3, 2019

After much research, I decided to go with the MSI X470 Gaming M7 AC for my new Ryzen 2700X build. The fantastic reviews (both professional and owner), dual heat-sinked M.2 slots, and great BIOS features are what convinced me. After a few weeks, I am not disappointed.

This board is solid, with good component cooling throughout. It was easy to install (the manual is quite thorough), and there are a ton of headers to support fans, RGB, and whatever other components you decide to add to your system. The BIOS holds a ton of customization options, and it's great to have the LED for error codes, as well as the back panel BIOS resets in case you screw something up. The onboard RGB is basic but elegant (my preference when it comes to RGB), and the Mystic Light software works pretty well to customize both the motherboard RGB effects, as well as those of 3rd-party components like RAM and case fans.

On the topic of software, the MSI suite seems to actually be pretty useful (in comparison to those of other manufacturers I've used in the past).

Overall, I've very happy with this purchase, and will definitely consider more MSI products in the future. If you're looking for a top-notch AM4 board, this is a great choice.

Just bought this and it arrived early, which was a bonus. But after that it went all down hill. fitted the amd 2600x with no problem. Installed the corsair lpx ddr 3200 ram x2. Fitted the backplate, so far so good. My corsair tx550 gold psu next & then the mornal stuff after that. Fired it up and no go when it came to getting into the bios. I removed 1 stick of ram, nothing. Then the other. Still no go.
So I went to the MSI site about the BIOS, and it looks like this has the version 1. But the s/n date is for August 2018. Which should work. Then looked to see what came with the board and mine had 1 sata cable missing. I then inspected board very cloesly and found some pins were slightly bent. The box itself had a torn off sticker. Thius makes me think this a rma board and I was sold it as a new one. I have had to order up another cpu (older version) to see if that will let me update the bios. So this has not been a sweet purchase so far :(
