PROS
-Amazing contrast: Great color contrast and perfect blacks allow images to really pop and you can take full effect of HDR with per pixel brightness
-Brightness: Since the screen does not get blisteringly bright, you can actually enjoy bright images and high contrast simultaneously. Do not get fooled by the ignorant, you do not need 1000 nits to run HDR. It is all about contrast and other tech requires extreme brightness to drive the contrast due to backlit zone brightness. OLED allow per pixel brightness from 0 to max, so you do not need to burn your retinas to get the desired contrast.
-Size: As long as you have a deep enough desk or sufficient standoff from the screen, you can run this 48” as a monitor no problem. The size is great for immersion and fairly useful for having multiple applications open at once and visible.
-Refresh/ghosting: This display has a good, not great, refresh at 120hz. This is sufficient for gaming and you are unlikely to see much difference compared to a 144hz. I know I do not notice a difference compared to my 144hz VA panel. Bear in mind, as you increase refresh rates, your ability to discern differences decreases, in other words you get diminishing returns. 60hz to 120hz is a bigger difference compared to 120hz to 180hz visually speaking. Due to OLED tech, ghosting is essentially nonexistent. There are some better OLEDs on the market that offer sub-1ms response times so this one is merely middle of the pack in that regard.
CONS
-OLED display: Burn in is a constant concern regardless of the brand, type etc. While OLED offer extreme performance, longevity is always an issue. Just be mindful of this.
-Safety routines: Be mindful to follow the instructions on the built-in OLED burn in defense routines. This will prolong the life of your display and all modern OLED displays will incorporate some variations of these routines. This does take some getting used to doing, but it is not difficult, just a small burden.
-Auto-dimming: This is a feature that automatically dims the display when static images are displayed. It progressively gets dimmer in steps to prevent burn in; however, its detection of image changing to reset the dimness has a high threshold. This can be annoying when running productivity type applications as you have to induce a significant change in image to reset the brightness to normal. Again all modern OLED displays do this, but some brands like Samsung have a much lower threshold, which makes it less noticeable and annoying.
One of the only drawbacks of the AORUS FO48U is that it dims the screen too often. This can be annoying when you are trying to watch a movie or play a game.
Overall, the AORUS FO48U is a great monitor that offers a lot of value for the price. If you can overlook the issue with the automatic brightness adjustment, then I highly recommend it.
Pros:
Stunning 4K visuals with HDR support
Fast 120Hz refresh rate
Wide viewing angle
Comfortable stand
Built-in KVM switch
Cons:
Automatic brightness adjustment dims the screen too often
Overall:
The AORUS FO48U is a great monitor that offers a lot of value for the price. If you can overlook the issue with the automatic brightness adjustment, then I highly recommend it.
The picture is great, everything else is not.
The ASC or Auto Static Control is supposed to help protect your OLED when not-in-use by dimming your monitor after a period of inactivity. The ASC is way too agressive and has activated twice while typing this review, and will be sure to activate as I continue typing. Don't try to code on this monitor the automatic dimming and brightening caused by the ASC is disturbing and anoying. ASC doesn't kick in while gaming, but the APCS does.
The APCS or AUto Organic Compensation System claims to send a mandatory message blocking the center view of your screen every 36 hours. The APCS will activate multiple times in a day closer to sending you a mandatory restart-your-monitor-message every 4 hours. Even if you power down your monitor for over 15mins to esnure the APCS process completes, the error message may persist immediately or pop-up again in less than 2 hours of monitor usage.
The monitor may be beautiful but the persistent interruption of its automated processes that can't be remedied is too much. Not good for coding, not good for gaming, beautiful when/if the monitor chooses to work.
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!
PS - The ASC activated (4) times while typing this review. The monitor and computer where active the whole time, and it did not take 20 mins to write this review.
PPS - There is a weird "feature" where a secondary usb connection is required in addition to your primary Display port or HDMI connection.
1) It has a auto-dimming feature that can't be turned off. The screen will dim by about 30% if the monitor determines there is no activity. This is very frustrating for normal productivity use. To restore full brightness you may have to move windows around on your desktop.
2) Sometimes it is difficult to get it to switch to another monitor input when the current one has been blanked.
3) The OSD font and graphics are "unique"/raw and scream gamer
4) The mandatory power off cycles can be annoying when your normal use model is to keep your monitor on full time and blank when the computer source blanks the screen.
