Between the picture quality and the price I would call this the best overall deal on the market TCL made a winner here. After viewing a lot of TV's for a family members gift I decided to go with this TV. The remote is simple, intuitive and easy to use and smart features make this TV a step above the rest. The Roku interface is fast, slick and simple to use and pushes which pushes this TV above the rest of competitors. I installed Amazon Prime, Hulu, Disney+ and Netflix all of these apps worked flawlessly.
Out the box the TV is extremely light and great for hanging, viewing angles are decent for a LED and on par with even more higher end LED TV's and the truth is when you are dealing with LED technology their all about the same when it comes to viewing angles. There is no magic wand that fixes the issue of viewing at angle and picture not degrading with LED technology.
There is one important and noticeable issue here that could be a deal breaker for some.
1. Brightness.
You'll notice this TV doesn't have Dolby Vision which isn't surprising at $299 but the reason it doesn't have Dolby Vision is it just isn't bright enough. Out of the box I was surprised at how fantastic everything looked but still went into the settings to see what I could tweak for a medium bright room the TV was placed in. I was surprised to see the brightness was already maxed out. I could play with the contrast but again shocked to see the brightness was already turned all the way up.
That being said above - I would not put this TV in a room beyond medium bright. Examples it would go great in an office or a shaded living room but if you live in an area where you going to have full on beaming daylight this is not the TV for you and to be honest you won't find anything in this price range with 4K HDR that will suit your needs. You'll need to spend more money on brighter TV and there is no way around it. With the overall picture quality, smart features and price I can't even knock one star off for such a good budget TV and if you have the right spot this is the TV for you.
I've had the TV now about two months and could not be more impressed. Though my family members eyesight is poor and unfortunately borderline blind in one eye which is why I opted for the ease of use this TV provides I have an eye for detail. I could not find a single dead pixel on this display and I have attention for detail. These TVs are well manufactured and the look and feel is more inline with a more expensive TV.
On another note I also did review the TCL 55S525 which is slightly more expensive TV with Dolby Vision but it suffers from the same issue with the picture brightness and the fact is the 55S525 doesn't get bright enough to even output a Dolby Vision quality picture. If you are thinking about this TV or the 55S525 save your money and buy this TV!
The bottom VESA holes are attached to nothing but the case plastic molding. This can cause a wobble if you put it on VESA legs (which I did because my cabinet isn't wide enough for a 42" legspan). The legs I got were 2 separate pieces, but if they were connected this would likely not be noticeable. Having said that, the top holes are very sturdy, and I feel good about the TV being safe even on the stand I got. I don't even think you would notice if you wall-mounted. This is really not a huge deal - the TV is lighter than you might imagine so it's more a question of left-right wobble when the unit is jostled, than it is of being safe and secure and held up properly (which it is).
My second complaint is more about Roku. The primary issue is that it IS the TV's firmware/OS. You can't not use Roku because its settings are the TV's settings - Brightness, inputs, etc. Why would you not want to use Roku, you may ask:
I have an HTPC. I don't need Roku. I just need a screen with an input. So I figured Oh, I just won't go to Roku on the remote/menu/whatever. But the TV is a Roku with a screen. Basically, if you want to limit its involvement in your home, your best bet would be to not connect it to the network. But you can't entirely "not use the service". So you may not care, but:
There are advertisements in the menu. They're about the size of a DVD box (maybe larger) on the 55" screen. They're stills, not animated or anything, no sound. But it kind of ruined the experience for me because what I though was going to be "my screen" is rented out as billboard space to 3rd-party companies, directly in my living room. Also, the telemetry and ad-tracking options are default-checked. And they asked me 2x if I want to enable the microphone to always listen. Kind of sketched out having an IoT device with a Mic that seems to prefer less-privacy and data collection over user experience. But I digress.
My last qualm is that this was the most unsatisfying new-plastic-film peel-away ever. So the plastic film they use to cover the bezel is also taped down - with tape on the display panel itself! I've never seen that. Anyway, I had the TV on when I was peeling the tape, and I could see it pulling the display cover away from the inner panel. Color warping and everything. I shuddered, as if watching nails on a chalkboard. A couple of pieces of tape stuck tot he panel and didn't peel away with the rest. Now I'm using my nails to remove the bits of tape and hoping that no damage to the panel would occur. All good in the end, but it was a harrowing experience.
All of that said, this is a pretty sweet TV for the price. Lighter than I expected, and very responsive. Simple remote, with the option of app-control using the Roku app (I haven't tried syncing with Unified Remote yet, we'll see). It's such a small remote, but that makes it easier to hold while you browse around.
4K looks beautiful, colors are good - not super wide range on the Blacks but you can't get that for anywhere near this price. Audio pass-through works well with no noticeable degradation in audio quality.
Overall it still deserves 5 stars. 55" for $300 is kind of a no-brainer if you're not a true videophile (but then you probably wouldn't be reading this review anyway). My last TV was a 40" Insignia that lasted 5yrs before I gave it away so this is an upgrade no matter how you cut it.
