With this game in the "Forbidden" line, you're going to need to think in advance. Winging it will most likely end in a loss. So if you like games where you have to think a little bit (not too much, it is a game after all), you'll like this one. Yes, chance plays its part, but you have much more control over how the game is going to go than with the other Forbidden games...at least in my opinion.
I know that some people have been giving poor reviews on this game claiming that you're likely to lose much of the time and that the pieces don't fit together well. So far, I haven't found that to be the case. I will say that some foreknowledge and forethought are required. So here are some suggestions to help you to be able to enjoy the game as much as I am:
1) Read the instructions thoroughly before playing. Since it has many of the same type of instructions from the previous Forbidden games, there won't be too much new to learn...and don't be surprised if you don't quite understand them completely at that point.
2) Go to YouTube.com and look up Forbidden Sky. There are a bunch of videos there that give runthroughs that are tremendously helpful (you can even watch them while waiting to receive your game). I watched the ones by "rahdo." He does make a few mistakes while showing you how to play (which he does point out, and they're nothing major), and he's amusing to watch...and he provides some good hints to help you.
3) The quickest way to lose the game is to start connecting the physical cable wires that will go to the rocket...Don't Do That until right near the end of your game! My guess is that with the people who say you lose the game more than 70% of the time do this one mistake on a regular basis. Save it until the end. Hint: if you've set up your game so that a bunch of your lightening rods are next to each other and you know how you're going to run them to complete the circuit, you can wire the lightening rods together...they're already electrified. Same with the Capacitors...you can wire them together and not end up electifying that area as long as you don't hook them up to the lightening rods.
4) Do a little bit of planning. a) Don't make the mistake of having all your Capacitors and lightening rods on one side of the game, while your landing pad ends up way off somewhere else where you're unable to connect them all together without a bunch of extra capacitors and/or lightening rods. b) Try to put lightening rods together in a row, as well as the capacitors in a row...as far as how you're going to be hooking them up to complete the circuit to and from the rocketship. c) Try never to waste a turn. This can be somewhat of a challenge as you're juggling between keeping yourself in the safest area you can, while trying to make sure to use tiles that are in your hand to build your board or just get rid of them for the gear cards (which can be a real lifesaver).
I know all of that may sound harder than it really is, but once you get the hang of the game, it's a blast...and very addictive.
P.S.-for those of you having trouble with connections of the physical circuit so the rocket will fire up, after a while the oil from your fingers can get on the metal connections. Try some rubbing alcohol on a Q-Tip (use caution of course...it is flammable until it evaporates).
Each player is basically playing as a dude on a space platform. Somewhere on this platform is your spaceship and to get off the platform you and your team have to run an electric circuit around the platform to the launchpad so you can take off. On your turn you can take 4 actions: move, draw a tile, place a tile, place or disconnect a wire, or use your characters special ability. I don't remember them all, but there is a doctor, I guy that can move other people around, a guy that ignore some of the platform/moving rules, and 2 others. At the end of your turn, depending on how bad the storm meter is, you will draw a card, and usually something bad will happen to you. Lighting can strike, the winds can shift direction, or the storm's intensity can increase (and at certain thresholds, this requires you to draw more storm cards). Once you've completed your 4 actions and drawn a card, the next player goes and so on and so forth. The game does not have a set number rounds, you play until you all take off together. There are several ways to lose: one person's health goes to 0, your rope tethering you to the platform is severed, not everyone took off together, or the storm gets to max intensity. I would estimate that my win ratio is about 33%. Some people might find this frustrating, but I am okay with a challenging game. There are aspects of this game that make think it is similar to Pandemic, some of the characters you can play remind me of the medic and dispatcher. At the end of your turn, you draw from the something 'bad' deck. Mind you, this game has nothing to do with viruses.
I like the components, especially the wires and the spaceship. It something about the size of a McDonald's Happy Meal toy, but once you put it on the disk and complete the circuit, it actually lights off, starts a beeping countdown, and then makes a 'Take Off' noise. Very satisfying to hear if you win--my group actually cheered the first time we won.
The tiles you draw will make the game random and there are 4 levels of difficulty. I like the game and am happy with the purchase, but it is not my favorite and I am not sure how often it will get into the cycle? I have these kicks, and right now I am into worker placement (and this is not).
