    Hybrid, 2-way, In-Ear Headphones

Prepare for an exceptional in-ear listening experience beyond compare and treat your ears to: deep bass, radiant mids, smooth highs, and notable vocal clarity. For the first time, proven Sony dynamic drivers are paired with cutting-edge Balanced Armature driver technology to deliver rich, dynamic, and detailed audio response.

    Sound Story

For years, Dynamic driver units have served us well, delivering reliable sound with rich bass all at low distortion levels. Balanced Armature headphones, on the other hand, are noted for their delivery of smooth and broad frequency response with notable vocal clarity.

    Recipe for Hybrid Audio

Combining proven 9mm dynamic driver units (rich, full frequency response) with cutting-edge full-range, Balanced Armature technology (full-range = broad frequency response with notable vocal clarity) for an in-ear listening experience embracing the best of both worlds: profound vocal sound with extended bass.

    Vibration Suppression Housing

A special sandwich consisting of a magnesium inner housing and ABS exterior provides the necessary rigidity for smooth frequency response and vibration suppression for clear mid-high range sound reproduction.

    Just your size…

Improved fit results in significantly lower sound leakage levels, both in or out, giving you uninterrupted access to your music. Supplied Hybrid silicone earbuds, (S, M, L), maximize overall sound quality and comfort. Supplied Noise isolation earbuds (SS, S, M, L) use urethane foam to provide increased ambient noise reduction.

    Tangle-free, Flat cord

The durable, 1.2m flat cord has a serrated finish that reduces tangles, so you can get caught up in your music, not your cord.

My order came with the wrong accessories and is missing the hybrid ear tips, cord organizer, clip, and the proper case to store them in. In addition, silicone ear supports. The foam located to isolate foreign debris is pushed all the way back on one ear and slightly stuffed in on the other. The bass tends to be muffled and the treble very distinct, sharp and clear. You are able to hear the crispness undebiably but are left wanting more out of any bass sound in any wave other than muted.Only other concern was the cable, seemed to be lacking Sony logos and only saying "Thailand" on the cable splitter.

My first IEM were the Sony MDR-EX300 and man they were great. I've had it for a while until it was recently stolen and I was in the market for new IEMs. After doing a lot of research and the price drop, I decided to jump on these, and I do not regret my purchase. Now, I am no audiophile by any means but hopefully, this review will help you on picking some decent headphones.

    Design:
I really like the red/black color scheme. The cable is Y-shaped, versus the annoying J-shape that many Sony headphones, including my old EX300, come with. The cable is flat and tangle resistant. You can roll up the headphones and put it in the included pouch, take it out, and it won't have that wire memory that some of the round cables have. I feel that the design of the cable also reduces the microphonics. They also include a shirt clip to reduce it even more, especially when you are exercising. The actual casing or body of the headphones is made of plastic, but stylish.

    Fit:
It comes with two sets of tips, both are the silicone hybrid tips, but one has foam and one doesn't. I tried the one with the foam and I didn't really like the fit/isolation. It just felt a little weird for me and I couldn't get a real good seal. The normal silicone tips worked a lot better for me, but it could be because I am used to wearing the normal one with my EX300. I read some reviews that the Comply tips make it even better, so I gave it a shot. I could definitely tell a difference, so see below on the sound quality. The casing is a little bit bigger than most IEMs, and kind of sticks out of your ear, but it doesn't feel heavy when you are wearing it. I don't feel fatigued after wearing it all day long at work.

    Sound:
So, once you get a good seal and have had some burn-in time with these, the headphones really shine. The comply tips definitely make a difference and brings out the sound more on these headphones. The bass is very controlled and prominent, but not super thumpy (if that is a word). It doesn't overwhelm the mids or highs and blends in with the music very well. The best part of these headphones are the mids. Mids are very crisp and clear. I really love how well these headphones do with vocals and instrumentals. It sounds bright and forward. I would say the highs is where these headphones are the weakest. I would say they were pretty harsh at the start, but after burn-in, it smoothed out. The quality is good but it isn't as crisp. The soundstage is pretty good. It sounds like you are at a concert and the singer or band is playing at you. The instrument separation is excellent, and you can definitely hear the different layers.

Overall, for $99, it isn't a bad price for an excellent pair of IEMs. If I can describe these headphones in one word, I would say it sounds "fun". Definitely consider the comply tips because I think it helps out these headphones a lot. It is a great set for someone who is looking for some entry level quality headphones.

So I bought these on wirecutter's advice (seems like a lot of people did here) especially since these were discounted.

Overall I like these as I was replacing my Shure se215's which never really worked new (read review, TL:DR version, sound would cut out in certain positions of the cables). Those eventually cracked in my bag after a few years.

    Pros:
+ Sounds good as well as any other ear buds in this class, I wouldn't say mind blowing but par for the class, I really don't care too much for bass laden ear buds either
+ Flat wires, helps with tangling
+ Small headphone jack area (a great plus as some get in the way of my phone case if the jack area is to bulky)
+ I really like the clip, it's a nice touch

    Cons:
    - the difference between the two sets of ear plugs isn't really that different. I would have preferred full rubber and full foamy ones.
    - while the clip was nice, the tangle attachment doesn't really work, so I don't use it
    - I couldn't find ear bud size / material that would work so I ended up taking off the full foam ones from my shure's

    Middle
    * The case is alright, I would prefer not to dig around and have an actual zipper, this is a preference, I ended up re-using my shure case
    * cord isn't that long so that's great when I have my device nearby or on me, when I want to use this as a PC earbud at work, it sucks, extension I has

Overall I think they're good headphones for the price, work well. Design is eye catching if you're into that sort of thing. I just needed some higher end replacement ear buds that won't break the bank. I'm not looking like some for the "ultimate ear buds for X price that tries everything and hates everything" sort of person.

    UPDATE 2-6-18
After almost 2.5 years of ownership (light ownership I might add) the cover for the right earbud just came off today. Now these have been at a desk (not carried around) for that amount of time so it is interesting the glued cover came off. I will glue it back but still worth noting.

These went on clearance on Amazon so I thought I'd give them a whirl after a few review sites rated them highly. Even at $75 I don't think these are worth it for me. The construction and eartip fit are top notch. I really like the cord as well...flattish, but not too flat (like the Klipsch R6 cable which coils weird). Unfortunately, after giving them 3 days break-in period the sound quality is so-so. The midrange is too soft and treble a bit muted, giving the overall sound character a mushy feel. I like a brighter sound. I have a pair of Klipsch S4 buds that I love and use all the time at the gym with Comply tips. I also have a pair of Klipsch R6s that are a bit too bass heavy for me, but still seem to have better midrange than the Sony H1s. My absolute favorite eargear right now are the Audio Technica ATH-M50x because of the excellent bass, midrange, and soundstage, but it's not really fair to compare a large pair of over-the-ear cups to IEMs.

I'll be returning these simply because my current Klipsch buds sound better than the Sony XBA-H1s.

    Packaging-5/5 Neat and appealing
Accessories-3.5/5 Good hybrid tips and cable winder, case and clip extremely bulky and ugly
Build Quality-4/5 Solid plastic housing with thick semi-flat cables and large strain reliefs
Sound-9.5/10 Excellent clarity and unparalleled midrange, sub-bass can be overly fast or underpowered on certain tracks
The first thing I noticed about these earbuds is that they are extremely large. In that regard, it is imperative to first have a proper fit and seal to get in isolation and to enjoy the full range of sounds. While they are large, they are quite light and come with a quite a few tips to choose from. Aside from the regular silicone tips, of which there are 4 sizes, it also includes 3 sizes of Sony foam filled hybrid silicone tips, which isolate quite well. The packaging is also quite nice and includes a somewhat bulky shirt clip, cable winder, and carrying case which is also a bit too large for my taste and lacks a zipper, instead having a fold-over slit. Sound quality-wise, it is spectacular. The dynamic driver does a good job keeping the bass vibrant and rumbling, while the housing design keeps it restrain and stops it from going too loud, keeping the range balanced. However, I noticed that on certain tracks this goes a bit too far, keeping driving bass lines on some dance songs a bit too distant. As for the treble and midrange, the balanced armature driver outputs incredible clarity, as expected. There is a noticeable emphasis on vocals and mid instruments such as guitars. Treble extension could be better, but is reasonable for the price paid. Soundstaging is pretty quite spacious and noticeable. Build quality is decent, with tough-looking plastic housing and thick semi-flat cables with a sliding Y-splitter. The cables unfortunately do have a large amount of flex memory, meaning that they retain bends and folds quite easily. Strain reliefs are large, but the ones attached to the earbuds themselves look a little strange, so only time will tell how long they last. Note that due to the large strain reliefs, these headphones are almost impossible to wear over-ear. Also because of the large housing, they stick out quite far from the ear. Another thing to note is that these earbuds are 40ohms in impedance, which is quite high. This means that you need to output a greater volume level to hear at a certain level, which can be somewhat straining on music player batteries when listening for long lengths of time. Overall, the sound quality is excellent, considering that these were only $120. They would even be a worthy purchase at full MSRP of $180. Accessories could have been a bit better, but these headphones still provide a great value and perform stupendously.

    Design & Comfort

The XBA-H1's earpieces are quite large, and may not suit every user's ears. Thankfully they are quite lightweight. The cable is good quality and doesn't tangle easily, Isolation is good. Given the large size of the earphone, Sony should perhaps had gone for a negative profile design.

    Sound

The H1 does really sound as if someone took a XBA-1/10/C10 driver and added a bass driver to it. You get the same feathery, brittle kind of sound of the XBA full range driver now combined with a dramatically more thumpy bass line. As a result the earphone is very thick and smooth in sound, and has a similar character to the Shure SE215.

overall this is a excellent headphone for a balanced sound signature.
