PRO:
1) space saver in the extreme. replaces an entire rack of solid dumbells, or a huge mess of weights and threaded collars.
2) Very fast and easy changing weights in the rack. Just as fast as going back to the dumbbell rack in the gym and grabbing a different pair.
3) solid materials and hefty grip. the grip isn't too small or too big and feels good in the hand.
4) black and red: muted colors look good and don't stand out or look too flashy.
5) the length of the dumbells has it's advantages in some lifts. curls as an example..it provides you with a great emphasis on control and twisting the weight as you lift has a greater effect since the weights are closer to the edges of the dumbbell.
CON:
1) the grips knurling feels a bit too harsh. I'm sure after time it will wear down, but with heavier amounts of weight, you can feel the knurls press into your hands, almost uncomfortably. I may actually take some sandpaper to them just to knock down the tips a bit. as a comparison, I use Olympic style bars for other work, and I'm used to rough steel and knurling. These are harsher then most.
2) their design makes them very long. for most of my lifting, this isn't an issue, but on occasion when I want to get my hand closer to get more flex (like in a chest press) I have to turn my hands a bit more then I'd like so they don't bump into each other. this length has its advantages too though (see 5 above).
3) The red lettering, while stylish and muted, can make the numbers hard to see in low lighting or if you have sweat clogging your eyes. Far too often I've lifted the weight, only realizing then that I had one side off from the other. White lettering, or a less reflective surface, would make them easier to see. I still like the red, but it takes a few moments longer to make sure I have the right settings.
4) due to the nature of the setup of how the weights are held in the dumbell, there's a bit of looseness in them. You can feel it when you lift, but it doesn't affect the lift. It's allot like having a threaded collar set when the collar is just a bit loose. Things don't wiggle around, but you can feel and hear a bit of clinking when you lift. Not enough to turn me away for sure, but it's there.
5) the entire package can be tough to move around. not a big deal if they inhabit the exact same space in your gym all the time. But in my garage, where my weight system shares space with woodworking tools and my pet car project, I often have to move things around to make space. But compared to a full rack of dumbells, it's a no brainer, these are way more compact and easier ot move around.
Overall, I like them a great deal, and at the price it's hard to find a quality pair of adjustable dumbells. a full solid set of dumbells for this weight can run you 1-2 thousand for the set. Other adjustable sets are more expensive, or odd shapes, and threaded collares are just a pain in the rear. These are cheap enough, and still have a good dumbell feel, and at the end of the day, still look sharp.
NOTE: I received these about a month ago, and have been using them regularly with no issues. But It seems like many people have issues at around the year mark, So I'm keeping my eyes open and will update if things change.
I make it a point to move them around gently. I don’t “baby” them per se, but I don’t drop them or knock them around unnecessarily. I have no issues with plates staying seated.
The grips are great for dumbbells of this weight capacity. I wear lifting gloves and the rough texture of the grips make for a very firm, stable hold.
The weight plates have a little play in them (of course), but it never feels like enough to make the dumbbell feel unstable. I think they’re remarkably still given the mechanics and multiple pieces.
I hate going to the gym. Two of these and an adjustable bench make lifting at home work. Plenty of weight, no issues, easy to use and then put out of the way.
The ease of changing the weights on these things is amazing. I just can't get over how much I enjoy using them.
I chose to buy the stand, and I can't imagine not having it. The height of the stand and the angle that it creates so that you can lower the dumbbells into the trays easily is well worth the money. Yes, all these things together get expensive, which is the drawback. I really tried to convince myself I could do without the stand, and I'm really glad I ended up buying it.
My remaining question is about long-term quality. They seem very well made, but I will use them for everything and see if the quality persists. If they need repair, I'll return to this review and update.
Wanted to add two things: One, it is true that occasionally, when you dial a certain weight, the plates don't click in immediately, and when you go to pick the dumbbell up, all 90 lbs are on it. You simply have to select a different weight, then select the weight you want again (in other words, just move the selector to a different weight and then back and that takes care of the issue). This unblocks whatever problem there was. I'd say this happens less than 5% of the time, so it's not a big deal. Second, sometimes, when you put the dumbbell back in the plate container, you have to put it back in at the proper angle or else it doesn't slide in perfectly and kind of catches on the plates. I've noticed this with the 40 lbs setting. This is not difficult to get used to, but after a demanding set when your arms are tired, when it happens the first time, you might find it annoying. You get used to this very fast (you learn how to slide the handle down to avoid this) and it isn't a problem.
Another thing to add: When you select 90 lbs, the plastic tray does not detach from the dumbbells perfectly. this is another reason to buy the stand, because on the stand, the plastic tray is strapped to the stand and you can pull the dumbbell free. If the plastic tray wasn't strapped down to something, it would be really annoying when it came up with the dumbbell.
