Averages Swimming Heart Rate Over Minutes, missing peak HR
I have not seen Garmin or anyone else discuss this, but it seems to me that the Garmin HRM strap averages my HR over a couple of minutes. I've attached two HR screen captures: one using just my Garmin Swim 2 watch and one using the HRM strap. These are typical of many others lap-swimming sessions. HR is the bottom red trace, and SWOLF is included just to show the interval of each lap. Total time shown is about 7 minutes for each. Notice that the Swim 2 by itself reports peak HR toward the end of each lap, as I'd expect. The HRM reports a slowly rising HR, with very little variation. It reaches a fairly steady level in 3min 20sec, and takes about 2min to get half-way there, which suggests to me that it is averaging the HR it measures for a time of order 2 minutes. It would be interesting to hear about this from Garmin or from other users. Even for long-distance running, I would think the user would like to know how their HR changes during short spurts of effort. I'll be primarily using my SWIM 2 for swimming HR.BTW, Garmin claims that the HRM strap is more accurate than the Swim 2 by itself, and it makes the Swim 2 switch to the HRM if it is available. This is probably because it is notoriously difficult to get a reliable HR measurement while swimming. For example, the Polar H10 shorts out in a salt water pool (see my H10 review). I find that if put the Swim 2 on fairly tightly (as recommended by Garmin), the HR readings are reasonable and reproducible. I had hoped that the H10 would provide a simultaneous measurement to compare with the Swim 2, but no luck there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Set-up was extremely easy, works great Update 9/4/2016: however, strap at clasp is deteriorating.
Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2016
Set-up was extremely easy, works great. Heart rate syncs every time with no problem. Only drawback is strap will gradually loosen the longer the swim session. At least once a week I will swim 2 miles continuous in a 25m pool and after about 1.5 miles, I will either have to stop to tighten or push off the wall with less intensity. I use mine with a 920XT and I love it.

Update 9/4/2016: the monitor still works flawlessly, however, the strap at the link is deteriorating quickly even after following rinsing/cleaning advice. After about four months (about 2.75-3 hrs lap swimming in the pool per week), i'm not sure how much longer it will hold. Trying to contact Garmin for advice.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed in the fabric strap quality (disintegrated after 6 months use).
Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2017
It works well with my Garmin 735xt. I swim 3x a week for an 1.5 hrs and battery lasted about 5 months before I had to change it. The battery was easy enough to replace, but the fabric portion of the strap itself is also very worn at this point and will give out eventually. I haven't found a way to replace the strap extender only without replacing the whole thing. (Is that the expectation here -- fabric strap extender that will last less than 6 months of regular swimming and then I'm supposed to spring for a whole new one ? ). I also wish the strap had more elastic to it -- I wear it under my suit, so it doesn't really slip , but it would be easier to put on if it had more elastic. The hooks for the strap are also not as comfortable as they could be. Overall, I'd expect better from Garmin.

Edit: The strap has disintegrated beyond repair at this point (6 months after purchase) and is no longer usable. I've written to Garmin and receive only a reply saying " I'm sorry, we do not sell the individual strap for the HRM-Swim. You will need to purchase a full replacement. " with no offer of resolution. I'm writing back again but holding out little hope that they will offer a resolution. For the moment, since the monitor itself still works, I'm going to try cutting the strap from an old swimsuit and creating a makeshift strap to see if I can still get any use out of it, but given Garmin's lack of responsiveness or any care to support their product, I will not be "purchasing a full replacement for this product" and I'll be looking elsewhere for a new sportwatch as well. Reducing my rating to one star.
