In the spirit of honesty, my original Moto 360 Sport that I bought from Amazon randomly died after just over a week of use. I have no idea how it happened but Motorola customer service was great and sent me a brand new one within a week. Yes, that was pretty disappointing and annoying but considering it seemed like a one-off situation (I could not for the life of me find anyone with a similar problem online and Motorola replaced it with no questions asked) and the replacement has been working 100% fine, I've gotten over it. Despite this setback I would still recommend the device to anyone looking for a fitness smartwatch.
Edit 8/15: Nope I'm done. A few months after it originally died, it died yet again. Extremely frustrating but whatever, they sent me yet another replacement. Now two weeks after receiving the second replacement, IT DIED AGAIN. Out of no where. I am so fed up with this now, I wish I could just get my money back at this point. There is no reason I should have to mail back a $250 device every two weeks because it it dies for no reason. This is absurd.
First, let’s just get the easy stuff out of the way. It’s a smart watch and does smart watch stuff reasonably well. It tells time. If you get a text/call/email, you’ll get notified. If you need a stopwatch, it’ll do that to. Blah…Blah…Blah…
Now for the things that sets it apart for runners – GPS on your wrist, Standalone Bluetooth MP3 player, and battery life.
First thing is having local GPS on your wrist and not having to lug around your cell phone. The Moto 360 Sport does this really well – once you figure out how to get it to work. It can be really tricky, but once you understand how to get it working, it’s pretty cookie cutter after that. It comes with a few preinstalled apps for tracking runs and they are mostly OK. After a lot of comparison though, Endomondo seems to work best for me. Strava seems to have a problem synching and Runtastic/Runkeeper are expensive. Once you get the GPS signal, it’s reliable, it tracks the run well, and it’s easy to use. The real tough thing is still getting the GPS signal established ONLY ON THE WATCH. If you’re not careful and establish the GPS while the watch is connected to the phone, as soon as you get far enough away from the phone so that it disconnects, the GPS will also drop. So, in order to get the GPS signal established ONLY ON THE WATCH, the following procedure seems to work 99% of the time.
1) Set your phone so that it is not using Wi-Fi and using only device (phone) GPS.
2) Set your watch so that it is not using Wi-Fi. Test the watch GPS and make sure it has establish a good link to GPS. Shut Down the watch.
3) Turn Bluetooth off on the phone.
4) Turn the watch on, and make sure that it connects to GPS.
5) Start up Endomondo and you’re good to go.
6) After your run, connect the watch back to the phone so that Endomondo uploads your run.
The next thing is using the watch as a standalone MP3 player while you’re running and using Bluetooth connected headphones. As already mentioned dozens of other reviews, the Bluetooth transmitter on the Moto 360 Sport SUCKS!!! I’ve now tested (3) standalone receivers with wired headphones and (3) Bluetooth headphones. In every case, unless something special is done, there are so many drops that it’s almost impossible to listen to MP3’s while running. If the Bluetooth receiver doesn’t stay within a foot of the watch, you’ll get signal drops. For Bluetooth headphones, I’ve had the best performance using SoundPeats Q9A+. For this, I had to wear the watch on my right wrist and not drop my hand below my belly button. Nothing I did for either SoundPeats Q9A or MPOW Cheetah’s would prevent constant skips and drops. For the best music listening experience, though, I found that connecting a Bluedio I6 directly to the watch strap and using a pair of KOSS Ultralight Sport Clips was best. No other standalone receiver was worth a crap including a Turata 2-in-1 Transmitter/Receiver (BT 4.1, APT-X) or an older BT3 receiver. The last thing for listening to the MP3’s while running was a player. I found that WearMedia player worked best. It allowed me to copy different groups of MP3’s to separate folders and listen to them separately. Google Play sucked… ‘nough said!
And lastly, battery life. I set up the GPS as detailed above the night before, so all I had to do was take the watch out of the charging cradle. Therefore, it starts off at 100% battery. Then, using GPS with Endomondo, keeping the screen to brightness level 2, and listening to MP3’s at a low-moderate volume, over a 1.5 hour run, I still had 50% battery at the end. That means that during a normal marathon, unless you’re Kenyan-fast, you’ll probably run out of battery
Ya’ll Run Well!
Update 6/7/2017
Just a quick update – The watch is working just as good, if not better, then when it was first purchased. The GPS does seem to be more stable now and is able to find a good signal easier. I rarely have to establish the GPS position through the phone anymore.
The biggest update is that I’ve finally found a pretty good, totally wireless, stable Bluetooth headphone-to-watch link using SoundPeats Q16 Earbuds. I wear the watch on my left wrist, so I paired it with the left earbud as the master and used the right one as the slave. Over the first run, there were NO drops and only 4 times that one earbud faded slightly (but never totally dropped).
