Garmin Garmin HRM-Run

The HRM-Run heart rate monitor provides the most advanced running metrics to high-end Garmin Forerunner running watches. The strap is seamlessly comfortable and easily adjustable while the module is small, lightweight and fits entirely within the width strap.

HRM-Run provides 6 running dynamics metrics:

  • Cadence — number of steps per minute
  • Stride length — length of your stride from 1 footfall to the next; measured in meters

  • Ground contact time — amount of time in each step that you spend on the ground while running; measured in milliseconds
  • Ground contact time balance — displays the left/right balance of your ground contact time while running (displays a percentage); for example, 53.2 with an arrow pointing left or right

  • Vertical oscillation — degree of ‘bounce’ in your running motion; displays the vertical motion of your torso, measured in centimeters for each step
  • Vertical ratio — ratio of vertical oscillation to stride length (displays a percentage); a lower number typically indicates better running form

If you get a year or more out of it, it is worth it.
Like many reviews, the main issue with these Garmin heart rate monitoring straps is longevity. I can't tell you how many I have owned over the years, but I factor into my training budget buying one annually.A chest strap heart rate monitor is way more accurate than any wrist-based sensor. On the plus side, the device is ready to go out of the box. How much hassle you have connecting it to your watch, phone, or bike computer is a function of that device and not the chest strap. Pro-tip, you need to remove the prior heart rate monitor from the list of sensors saved on your watch. The Garmin HRM does return some interesting data in addition to heart rate such as ground contact time, vertical oscillation, etc. So, it is a very useful device for training. It suffers the same issues as all chest straps. The contacts have to be moist in order to work. That usually isn't a problem for running unless it is really cold. I find that I get highly variable and inaccurate heart rate data below 35-40F degrees. The same can sometimes happen with cycling if the air is dry.If you can get 4-8 months out of the first battery, that is good. It has been my experience that once you break the seal to replace the battery, that begins the slow deterioration of the device. The picture I posted is of the battery I used to replace the first battery. I took out that second battery after a few months as the device just wasn't tracking data accurately. As you can see, moisture crept in. I tried replacing that second battery, but the strap just never worked right. It is now in a landfill.Heart rate training is essential and a chest strap is the most accurate device you can use. However, there are tradeoffs. They are simply not going to last very long. As such, I wish they were a little cheaper.

So far, so great! It's quite comfortable to wear, once you get the placement right. It took me a little while to figure that out. I was wearing it too high, and it was biting me where the clasp rested. After I got the placement correct, it's not been any trouble at all since.

It was easy to initially sync up with my Garmin watch, and it typically syncs back up as soon as I put it on or within a handful of seconds. There have been a few, rare times when it has not synced up at all, but I found that is more of a problem with my watch (restarting the watch fixes the problem).

It does appear to be quite accurate. A few times, I've used a second monitor of some sort (on a gym machine or a separate individual monitor), and I've also just palpated my pulse. Readings always are in line.

I've used it quite regularly and often for about 15 months, and the battery is going strong. The only thing I've done for maintenance is to give it a good rinse after each use and letting it dry.

I had recently purchased a Garmin Fenix 6. I've only been running in very cold temperatures and I noticed that the wrist-based heart rate monitor could become wildly inaccurate for no reason (yes, I was wearing it snug)... like it'd jump to 175bpm for no reason and stay there for 15 minutes, when I was obviously closer to 140. I'm a pretty experienced runner so I definitely know the difference between 175 and 140.

I was a bit annoyed to have to spend another $100 on a chest-based heart rate monitor after spending SO MUCH on a Garmin Fenix 6.

After about 1 month worth of runs with this chest strap, I can say that I'm happy with its performance. It very accurately captures my heart rate data under every circumstance I've tried with it (keep in mind, I've only run with it in fairly cold weather so far). It pairs super easily with my watch. All I need to do is wet it, and strap it on, and I'm ready to go. I thought at first that I'd have to do some lengthy pairing process each time but that's not the case. It has quickly become part of my running routine. Definitely recommend if you want accurate heart rate data

I had the old HR monitor that I'd paired with my Garmin Fenix 3. I liked it alright. It wasn't the most comfortable, and it only transmitted the heart rate. I found it functional in that regard, but it wasn't nearly as cool as this new monitor is. This thing is awesome.

This new version is more comfortable, slightly easier to put on, and connects quicker and more reliably than the older one. In addition to that, the data it tracks and displays is nothing short of incredible. It tracks and displays (via the Garmin Connect app or website) vertical oscillation, gait imbalance, ground contact time, and it even calculates VO2 Max to a degree. The way the data is displayed on the app or website is interesting and offers insight into my workouts like I've never seen before. I read about it before purchasing, but after using it, I'm pretty impressed. I used to not really care if I wore the old on every run, but this new one? I love it.

*** Please read the full review, as it's a mixed bag. In the end, I'm keeping my rating at 4 stars because of my fantastic experience with Garmin support, the phenomenal performance of the HRM (before it dies), and the fact that my research indicates most chest strap HRMs have issues with the straps failing electrically or mechanically (although other brands do have replaceable straps). I can't emphasize enough my lack of frustration with the HRM until it zombifies itself. I've literally never experienced inaccurate readings or "fussiness" with the electrodes. I put the thing on dry and it just starts reporting my HR, no issues.

    UPDATE, 5/30/2018: Restoring 2 stars.

I gotta restore the stars because Garmin customer support was too good not to do so. They answered the phone in 30 seconds from a US based call center. I briefly described my previous two fails with this product and reminded them of the other Garmin products I own that are great. The CSR immediately volunteered to replace my unit, sight unseen, without proof of purchase, with the HRM-Tri version of the band. He and I theorized that maybe, just maybe, the silicone backing on the Tri band might be more resistant to sweat damage.

    UPDATE, 5/28/2018: Removing 2 stars.

The HRM-Run I purchased on 7/31/2017 just died. The unit was religiously washed and rinsed per Garmin's care instructions. Nothing will even begin to coax it to life, including a new battery and the "reset" method of shorting the battery terminals for 10 seconds before replacing the battery. I'm going to see if Garmin will replace it and will update the review accordingly.

    PROs:

o The Garmin-specific running dynamics stuff is pretty cool
o Until it dies, it just works fantastically well. See Cons.
o I haven't tried other HRM straps, but I find this one to be very comfortable, to the point where I forget I'm wearing it.

    CONs:

o It may be unfair to call this a con, as it may be required with other/all HRMs... If you don't follow the rinsing and washing instructions, sometime within a year, it will die and never come back -- something to do with the electrodes and salt, I believe.
o This HRM is a single unit -- you can't replace the strap or sensor or electrodes separately. If anything breaks, you're buying a new one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reliable Heart Rate Monitor.

I use this strap to measure my heart rate while running with a Garmin Forerunner 630 watch. It fits comfortably and snugly and rarely slips down, unlike some others I've had. I did once try a wrist HR watch (Garmin 235) but the heart rate readings were very unreliable, so I traded it in for the 630, which has no wrist HR. This strap is so much more reliable for HR than wrist measurement. Occasionally, I need to re-tighten it. This is my second Garmin HRM-Run strap. The first lasted me around 5 years, wearing it during nearly all my training runs and races, so it doesn't owe me anything. It eventually lost Ant+ functionality and could not communicate with my watch. The button battery (CR 2032) probably lasts me around 6 months, running 4 or 5 days per week. I recommend this item.
