Editorial Reviews

Product Description

The music on this CD will break hearts with the melded sounds of piano, saw, pump organs, guitar, trumpet and vocals as well as the odd percussive instrument. The sound may cause some of you pain or joy, or both, as their music rings out with sorrow and heartache, yet there is an underlying element of emancipation. Track Listing: "We Always Knew," "Guess I'll Forget You," "Once Said at the Fires,", plus more.

Imagine an old, dimly lit cabaret, the kind of place where you can always hear rock singers with a taste for dark, romantic songs. It's the sort of boîte that might have featured Jim Morrison in the '60s, David Bowie in the '70s, and Nick Cave in the '80s. But sometime in the late '90s, the Black Heart Procession took over as the house band. The San Diego group likes to savor its gloom: slow to medium tempos and lengthy, atmospheric intros abound on Three. Piano is the key instrument here, but a plethora of noises create sonic webs throughout the disc. Organ stylings, the haunting tones of bowed saw, and occasional trumpet parts further color the songs. Three drumless tracks, "Till We Have to Say Goodbye," "Never from This Heart," and "The War Is Over" are standouts. But drumming features prominently on "On Ships of Gold," the CD's powerful closer. This depressed march, with eerie backup vocals by Kazu Makino of Blonde Redhead, possesses a delightfully odd and spooky vibe. --Fred Cisterna

I actually played a song off this at my fathers funeral. Do we have to say goodbye? One sister hated the supposed melancholy of it, I loved it. I hated her song too to be responsive to her comment.lol Someone stole the CD so I ordered another, thats how much I appreciate this CD.

The black heart procession makes some great music and I've seen them live doing some awesome tunes. This album isn't as good as the "amore del tropico" record in my opinion but these are the only two albums I've listened to by this band. just my opinion, everyone is entitled to their own specific music taste but this is a great band!

If you like the BHP's style, and enjoyed 2, this album is for you. They stick with the same basic structure of emphasis on piano, with guitar and light drums (and dont forget the saw and background effects) which prove to once again blend together perfectly. It seems like a continuation of "2" with just more of an emphasis on drums. I must admit that it took me more listens to truely appreciate this album, but in the end, i feel that it just may be their best. A dark but beautiful third album by one of my favorites.

*Waterfront* is one of those "most beautiful songs, by anyone, ever". Maybe a shoreline wasn't wasted on this city after all.

Aside from a few standout tracks, these gothic barroom ditties are stretched a little too thin, if sustaining a certain darkened mood effectively.

1.0 out of 5 stars pressage lamentable
Reviewed in France on October 12, 2020
