Here are a few notes of someone who lives in a place full of goatheads (google for it!) and knows a thing or two about fixing flats with these:
* Some people say these patches don't work well for road bikes, due to the higher pressure of their tubes. I don't ride road to verify that, but believe it's a possibility.
* The glue is *very* sticky. Avoid touching it with your fingers at all costs, as it won't glue as well in the region you touch. This is a bit tricky, as the patch is very flexible, but becomes easier once you get the hang of it.
* Don't try to reuse a patch. If you accidentally stick it in to the wrong place in the tube, throw it away and use another one.
* Always empty your tube completely before attempting to repair it! Applying the patch in a stretched (full) tube will cause it to shrink and possibly leak when the tube is not fully inflated (although I have a few in this condition and they never leaked.)
* Once you stick the patch to the tube, squeeze it well with your fingers removing every trace of air under it. I normally "stretch" it a bit once it's glued, using my thumbs.
* Try to avoid tube seams, when possible. The few cases of patch failure I had happened because the hole was too close to the seam and the seam made it impossible for the patch to seat well. If the hole is close to the seam, prefer to have it off the center of the patch, it if means not patching over the seam.
* They will fail occasionally, but at least for me, it's very rare occurrence. Most cases of failures had to do with seams and holes that were just too big. In these cases, a new tube is in order.
This patch worked great! Was up and running immediately after applying the patch and not even a slow leak.
When I get a "good" tube, i.e. one which holds air for a long time without loosing pressure, I prefer to keep it in service by patching it instead of replacing it; these patches are ideal for this, providing the puncture hole is not very close to one of the raised molding seams on the tube. It is very difficult to sandpaper such seams down to a level surface. If you try to stick a patch on over such a seam, the seam will defeat the adhesive and lift the patch up off the tube, allowing the pressurized air inside the tube to escape along that seam, instead of sealing itself firmly to plug the hole. Normally, the air pressure inside will press the tube against the patch, and the patch against the tire, squeezing the patch firmly against the tube IF the puncture hole is at least a few millimeters away from one of these raised seams on the tube. IF the hole is very close to a seam, I use the spare tube instead of one of these patches.
So, I rate these easy patches as "good", but not perfect for ALL situations. I carry 2 spare tubes, one of these adhesive patch kits, and a backup liquid-glue type patch kit just in case I get several flats on my long rides. So far, I have always gotten home, and never had a problem with one of these patches used on a small hole away from a molding seam.
