Who Can Use the iLIGHT Pro Plus Quartz System?
- The iLIGHT Pro Plus Quartz system is an over-the-counter system intended for the removal of unwanted hair.
- The iLIGHT Pro Plus Quartz system works best on medium to darker hair colors and will not work on light colored hair like white and grey. It is less effective on lighter hair colors like light blonde or red.
- iLIGHT Proprietary ProPulse Technology works by identifying hair follicles and disrupting their growth at the root. The process relies on the ability to differentiate the pigmentation contrast between the hair and skin, which is why iLIGHT is less effective if light or dark hairs are too similar in color to your skin tone.
- Do not use the iLIGHT device on dark skin or over tattoos or dark spots on your skin.
- Refer to the Use and Care Guide for a complete list of contraindications and warnings.

I have used this product twice on my chest and abdomen about 3 weeks apart. The first treatment was done on the lowest power level, and the second I did on the second power level. I'm a pale hairy dude with dark, coarse hair so theoretically the IPL method should work great.
Based on the two treatments, I have noticed a marked reduction in hair growth around my abdomen where I was able to shave the hair closest prior to using the IPL. On my chest, the hairs were less compliant (coarser, harder to shave close) and the results were patchier. I would say I've noticed maybe a 60% reduction in hair growth in my abdomen and about 40% on my chest. It's patchy because it's hard to keep track of where you've treated and where you haven't (hence an amusing horizontal strip of hair that has grown back) but I'm still pleased with the results.
I didn't see much after the first treatment, but we're at about 4 weeks after the second treatment now and there are several hairs with a kind of thin appearance which are thicker and darker near the base. I started wiping at or gently tugging on these and found most of them are coming right out, so the IPL is doing what it says it would do. I am not tweezing these out or yanking on them real hard, I'm a wuss I don't have the pain tolerance for that. The ones which are visibly thinner and not growing and where the follicle is on its way out will come out with little trouble. If a hair seems like it's coming out but is still "secure" just leave it there and let time do its thing.
Regarding pain and appearance/side effects: I have several spots where I have two hairs basically right on top of each other now, though one of the hairs is visibly stunted and the other is growing like a new hair. Some of these stunted follicles come out as mentioned above. This is in an area with greater follicle density and where it was harder to shave close, so it's probably my fault. Regarding pain, it can be minimized if you shave absolutely as close as possible. I took a warm shower and turned the water mostly off and shaved with a basic 2-blade razor and generic shaving cream and was able to have almost no real pain from the testing. The real issue was on portions of my chest where shaving was difficult and the hair was a little too long. Those hurt more, but still just felt about like that rubber band sensation people were talking about. Next time I'll double down and shave the hair closer to make the treatment more effective.
Regarding how intense you should go: Follow the instructions they give. I didn't go higher than I was comfortable with on the pain scale and it's working great for me on level 2. As I mentioned, very pale skin, black & coarse hair.
Regarding how to do this comfortably: Make it a bit cooler in your home and don't wear any clothing near the zone you're treating. If you're treating along your waist, just go without clothes. Let your skin have some time to recover before dressing again (like 30-60 mins). If you don't have to get dressed, don't and just let the treated area recover. If you *have* to get dressed, wear a loose fitting, light robe tied loosely. I found this made the post-treatment skin sensation a little less intense (kind of like a mild sunburn that goes away fairly quickly). I also found if you're worried about overlapping treatment areas while scooting along the surface of your skin, just give it an extra couple seconds to cool off. I moved each flash treatment about the width of the quartz lens (like 3/8" or so) and had no negative side effects from having a slight overlap.
Regarding use on more "sensitive" areas: Can't help you there, except to say if you're going to do anything you make darn sure you get a close shave before trying anything. Also keep in mind how rapidly skin tone changes in sensitive areas when choosing the power level.
As for my cons for the product:
- It is pretty loud (don't use it at night if you have neighbors)
- It's hard to track the areas you have treated as you go
- The button is kind of hard to press while holding it against your skin at an odd angle
- It's awkward to try to press your chest against the light sensor on this thing so it can check your skin tone. Maybe put the light sensor on the hand tool portion so you aren't contorting yourself to check the sensor?
Also consider including one or two pairs of those cheap plastic roll-type sunglasses/shades like you get after your eyes get dilated. The flash can be hard to keep your eyes safe from when working on your chest, and it caused a little eye fatigue after use as a result. Got better almost immediately though. Also be aware that you might smell like burning hair or ozone after using the product so do it in the afternoon or on a day when you're not going out.
As for my pros for the product:
- All of the above text.
- It doesn't hurt as much as I thought it would
- It worked surprisingly well (even considering i'm pale with dark hair)
- It's fairly quick to do a treatment
- Your skin recovers fast
- It's discrete (outside of the noise)
- It's incredibly convenient (total treatment time didn't break 40 minutes for my entire chest and abdomen, I can't imagine how long it would have taken to do this in a clinic)
This does exactly what I want it to do and it will be helpful for controlling hair growth in the future. Also, other side note, if you can get somebody to help you with this consider doing so. It's really hard to see what you're treating when you start getting at chest level and above. I can imagine the same for areas on your back. Otherwise, get some good magnifying mirrors.
Initially I didn't question it since my iLight came in a pro plus quartz box and I even compared the the bulb to the picture on Remington's website (definitely the quartz). After I got an comment to confirm I had the right product, I saw the base of mine also shows IPL6000 as does the manual - you should find an inserted addendum for quartz. I wanted to confirm so I checked with customer service. The base model is still IPL6000, the Q is for the the quartz bulb and the upgraded technology, but it will not say IPL6000Q on the base
-----------
I started looking for an at home hair removal solution and finally chose Remington's IPL (Pro Plus Quartz model). I researched different options and brands. Not surprisingly with this type of product, I read a lot of mixed reviews and it's hard to tell which ones to trust; however I came to my decision because 1) I knew the brand and 2) sounded like my best chance of results with the least amount of side effects, I don't want to burn my skin in the process.
I will say that I'm a good candidate for this system, my skin and hair color match the recommended, and I followed the instructions. It's not hard to figure out, but I still watched the videos online before trying. I used it on my legs, under arms, and bikini line. The verdict - it's working. It's slow, but if you want immediate results, then stick to shaving. I went into it with realistic expectations, I knew it was going to take some time. After my third treatment, I saw slight hair reduction. After a couple more, the hair is noticeably thinned.
So, yes it's going to take some time. I still need to shave, but there is a definite reduction in hair and I'm optimistic it will continue as I keep using the device. It does also depend on your application. It's prone to user error, my first couple sessions I was lazy and missed areas on my legs, I can tell where I did and didn't apply the treatment. It can be a little tedious if you're doing a large area, but spend the extra time to get every inch - it'll save you time in the long run.
Using the i-Light was simple and relatively painless. It sometimes stings for a second, but it's tolerable and quick. It does seem to get hotter if you're using it for extended periods of time, I've never had a problem with it overheating, but usually give it a minute in between body parts to cool.
Overall, I'm happy with my choice. I do think the i-Light delivers on its claims - as long as you are using it as intended and give it a chance to actually work, you won't see overnight results. I'm going to stick with it and hope by summer I can be at the point where I no longer need to shave.
