Tips: My use is 1 cup (the measuring cup it comes with inside) to 1 cup (same cup) of water. Follow the rest of the instructions and voila! Perfect rice on the go!
I was looking for a better option than refrigerating/heating up leftover rice. A friend told me about this mean green machine, and it was affordable enough that I wouldn't be too upset if it didn't work out. Because it's so small, it took me a couple of tries to get the water level right (too small to use the hand test). And boy oh boy do I love it. Not only is it the perfect amount of rice, but it's so fast!! This is the best appliance purchase I've made in a while and I will be bragging about it every time I hear "rice" in a conversation.
How to use this rice cooker (Let's just ignore the food warmer/steamer for now)
1) The measurement of rice must be done with the plastic measuring cup provided with this rice cooker (or by any Japanese made rice cookers). "1 cup" in rice cooker world is 180 ml. (Trick #1) This is based on the old Japanese measurement system. In this review, I will refer to "cup" as the plastic measuring cup (180 ml) that comes with the rice cooker. Here is how it goes. (see from 2 below)
2) This rice cooker is capable of accommodating up to 1.5 "cups" of uncooked rice. I think you can cook as little as 0.5 "cup". Measure the uncooked rice with the measuring "cup". Wash the rice in a container OTHER THAN the inner pot that comes with this rice cooker. (if you wash the rice in the inner pot, it will ultimately scrape the non-stick coating) (Trick #2) Wash the rice, changing water, until the water runs clear.
3) Once the water runs clear, rice is ready to be placed in the inner pot of the rice cooker. Put the washed rice in the inner pot. If you used 1 "cup" of uncooked rice, fill the inner pot with the washed rice already in it with water up to the level that says CUP 1.0 on the inner pot. (If you used a half "cup" uncooked rice, then fill the water to CUP 0.5 level. If using 1.5 "cup" of uncooked rice, then fill to CUP 1.5.) Do not use more than 1.5 "cup" of uncooked rice.
4) Place the inner pot into the rice cooker, making sure the bottom of the inner pot is NOT wet.
5) Place the outer lid and lock the lid by raising the green ring on the either side, clicking to secure the lock.
6) Plug in the unit. The red "cook" light will come on, but this does NOT mean that the unit is on and ready to cook! There is a green switch below the "cook" and "warm" lights. You need to press the switch down to actually turn on the rice cooker. (Trick #3)
7) When the green switch comes up, the red "cook" turns off, and the green "warm" (this means 'keep warm') light comes on, the cooking is done, BUT leave the cooker closed for at least 5 minutes. I think 10 minutes is even better to let the rice finish steaming. (Trick #4)
8) Raise the green handles up (Trick #5) before unlocking the lid to open the rice cooker, otherwise you may burn your hands with the hot steam coming out of the cooker when you open it! (Yes, I burned my hand more than a couple of times until I figured this trick out)
9) You can leave the unit on and leave it "warm" if you are not finishing the rice on one meal. It will keep the rice warm for up to probably 12 hours safely. That's the standard for general Japanese rice cookers. (I often leave the rice 24+ hours and it keeps it warm and fine) HOWEVER, this rice cooker is SO tiny, and the amount of rice left in the cooker is so small, it will dry out the rice so quickly if you leave the rice in "warm" setting for more than just a couple of hours. So, the "warm" setting is really impractical once you eat some of the rice and have leftovers. I'd as soon keep the leftover rice in the fridge. (Trick #6) It is, however, nice that the rice cooker keeps the freshly cooked rice hot if you are not opening the rice cooker and eating it right away.
10) Obviously, you can't wash the base unit by immersing it in water! The inner pot is of course washable. Since the inner pot is non-stick, use non-abrasive only to wash. The lid SHOULD ALSO BE WASHED. There is an inner lid part that easily pops out. (Trick #7) You should wash the inner lid as well as outer lid. The outer lid's silicon rim should be thoroughly dried otherwise mold will eventually form. Leaving it in drying rack will do it. At any rate, I wouldn't put any part of the rice cooker in dish washer.
That's it! It seems like a lot of work, but it really isn't once you get the procedure down. This tiny rice cooker is so portable, you can take it anywhere. It's also perfect for one or two person meal. I have two larger rice cookers but I no longer use those if I'm cooking for one. The small steamer/warmer container that came with the rice cooker - I find it to be mostly useless. If you are cooking 1.5 "cups" of rice, the steamer/warmer container won't fit the rice cooker. (By the time the rice is done, the rice will be squished, which is not a good thing) I think it is just meant to be a warmer. If you have, say a cup of soup in it, it will probably be warm by the time rice is cooked. But I can easily do that either on stove top or in microwave. I tried steaming bits of broccoli, but they didn't cook through and the broccoli smelled like plastic. So, I'm not using that little steamer/container.
This rice cooker seems to work best when you just make 1 "cup" (measurement is uncooked rice) of rice. When I made 1.5 "cups" of rice, the center of rice was soggy and the outer edge dry. When I made 0.5 "cup" of rice, it seemed a little undercooked. By the way, most of these Japanese style rice cookers are made to optimally cook short grain (and maybe medium grain) rice. I haven't tested with long grain or brown rice yet. When I do, I will update my review to let you know how it does.
Conclusion: It's great for the size, it cooks rice ok (not fantastic, but adequate). If there is a 3.5 star, I'd probably do that. But since I can't, I'll give it a four-star. It is after all handy to have this size of rice cooker, and the price was very reasonable.
The size is perfect for 2-4 servings of rice. My general use is - 1/2 the included cup of rice to 1 full included cup of water. Then I add seasonings to the pot and a spritz of meyer lemon oil or coconut oil.
Contrary to others, I always insert the warming container. Due to the design of the cooker, it seems that the warming container provides additional seal/protection from over boiling. In 6 months of use, I have never had the pot boil over.
Make sure you press the "cook" switch after setting up your rice! Nothing worse than waiting 30 min and finding nothing but hot water and semi soft rice in the pot! (Only the warmer is automatically engaged as soon as you plug in the cooker).
Note - the inner metal lid is removable for easy cleaning. Simply pull an edge of the metal part and it will separate from the lid at the silicone gasket.
The teflon coated interior pot is a breeze to clean.
update 2/16/2019: rice cooker broke, will not work. Expected it to last more than 4+ months,
