Xenoblade Chronicles 3D - New Nintendo 3DS
While I haven't played the game itself, I enjoyed its Wii U "sequel". The story of the game is very immersive, and side-quest heavy games like this lend themselves to portable consoles.
Hyrule Warriors: Legends - Nintendo 3DS
I played this game's Wii U predecessor. If you enjoy beat-em-ups with lots of grinding, here it is. (Will run on 3DS, but many found it to be quite sluggish)
Super NES games
There's a lot of these. I haven't gotten any of these on the 3DS, but I definitely recommend Super Mario World and Earthbound.
I mainly tested it with Super Smash Bros. - Nintendo 3DS and Monster Hunter Generations - Nintendo 3DS Standard Edition . The normally sluggish load times on these games were actually pretty fast here. Saving about 20-30 seconds of load time is always a good thing. The new circle pad feels stange at first, but you get used to it. It worked great as a camera control in Monster Hunter, and I may not be able to play the game without it again. I had mixed results when using it in Smash Bros. The new trigger buttons worked fine in Smash, but there aren't many other games that actually use them. The "super-stable" 3D works infinitely better than that of the normal 3DS, but it still has a limited range. I wear glasses, which seems to have affected the face tracking, but it is a concern. Amiibo work fine in the few games they work in, but it's mainly just Smash for now.
Overall, this is the best version of the 3DS. Its new features are a selling point, but you're mainly going to get use out of the new circle pad. If you want to play Xenoblade, Hyrule Warriors, or Super NES games portably, this is definitely worth your money. Monster Hunter's new camera control is also nice. If you want a cheaper variant, you'd be best off going with a basic New 3DS, but a 2DS is still a decent choice given its price point.
EDIT: Having had more time with the console, it has been very stable, and I have not had any issues yet. I also had a chance to test out the new internet browser, and while it isn't amazing, it's much better than the laggy mess the original 3DS had. Just remember to check the box for "Request Mobile Sites"; it helps immensely on sites like Wikipedia. The downloads are also bit faster than that of the 3DS. It's not worth upgrading for, but it's there.
The special edition I got ended up selling out. Despite my earlier praise for its appearance, you shouldn't get a scalped special edition N3DS XL unless it's relatively cheap. It's not worth paying $250-$300 for a $200 video game console that just looks better. Also, if you already have another 3DS variant, it isn't worth upgrading at the moment due to the fact that the upcoming NX console seems to be largely portable in functionality. Rumors also claim that the NX won't support backwards compatibility, though, so if you don't have a 3DS and want to play 3DS games, go for it.
Even with the eye tracking the screen is far from being usable for anything more than a few minutes of play, there is constant ghosting, blurring, and so forth. You're better off leaving the 3D off.
Why would one have a power cord for a new device when they changed the connector from the older style.
