There’s been a lot of coverage of what the game is lacking. The “point of the game” is pretty straightforward - kill the plague hearts, complete your leader’s legacy quest to beat the game. This can certainly get repetitive after the first time through, although there will still be some new mini quests that pop up with your subsequent survivor communities. Graphically the game is just ok, definitely nothing mind-blowing. And finally, probably the one fault of the game that irks me the most is the voice acting. The developer definitely skimped on this and the little bits we get are repetitive, poorly acted and often times comical. You’d think survivors of a zombie apocalypse would have a *bit* more emotional range.
Despite all that, you have to consider you’re paying (at most) for half of a AAA game and I think there’s definitely more than half a game here. Base-building is fun, although I usually don’t deviate too much from my workshop, garden, infirmary combo. Looting locations is fun to plan out and hasn’t been done this well in any other game I’ve played. Also, multiplayer can be a blast. Join another players game and stock up on supplies while not worrying about your own community or allied enclaves bothering you for stuff. Or have people join you to run roughshod through all the plague hearts you’ve uncovered so far in your town and get you closer to the end game. The game is pretty fun to play again since you can use “legacy cards” to give you a bonus for your next community. You can also use up to 3 of your past survivors in your new community, so you can continue to level them up.
All in all I think this game has gotten a bit of a bum wrap from reviewers and the people that wrote their reviews before the first big patch. The game is definitely rough around the edges, but the developers seem committed to improving it and it seems like a good value. I’m also really looking forward to the two announced DLC packs which will hopefully keep me coming back after the base game has gotten stale.
If you’re a fan of killing zombies, I can’t imagine why you’d want to pass this one up. Happy hunting!
My review is based solely on Single Player!
My recommendation is to watch some gameplay on Twitch before you buy. Before I watched I saw a lot of snarky negative reviews that had turned me off, but once I started watching actual gameplay . . . and saw the game was less than $25 dollars with Amazon Prime I was in. And I've not seen or experienced much of the "bugginess" which people complained about so I'm very happy I bought it on release.
I've probably got about 50+ hours in and still have a LONG way to go with my first Community. So based on length of play alone, the $25 price tag is worth minimum 4 stars. And I anticipate at least another 150 hours because the game is quite addictive. And starting a new community would be another new game because each character is uniquely generated with varied traits.
The cons that drop it to 4 stars for me:
- There really isn't much of a tutorial or Help section so you'll get a little frustrated in the beginning and after progressing trying to figure out how to do certain things within your community. I ended up going to Youtube or the Reddit on more than a few occasions to get the Help I needed.
- Enlisting followers at your own base should be much simpler . . . it's way too hard to find your own people at your base to ask them go on a mission with you. Too much time wasted running around figuring out where they are
- Tethering of your companion is the biggest bug I've found. I'll be out miles from my base fighting zeds with two people and then my companion will sometimes (1/10?) just disappear . . . leaving me to make it back alone. Not fun
If you like zombie fiction and games that require a little bit of thought and planning then do yourself a favor and pick this up.
This game is very fun and has immense replay value. The permanent death factor adds a lot of intensity and the simulation aspect of community building adds so many layers of subtlety over a typical mindless run and gun game.
Sure there are the odd graphical glitches here and there, but nothing game breaking. Fun factor far outweighs any graphical issues.
