They have decent instructions and are very communicative but the product itself works really well. It just took me a few times to get the angle right and find a good place to put the whetstone so that it would not slip around while making the swipes of the blade against it. By the third knife, I have sharp usable blades again! When we moved things were in disarray and the knife block was lost and the good knives got duller quicker. Now I have blades that easily cut through tomato and apple skins with ease. As someone who values good kitchen equipment, I am surprised I waited so long to get a whetstone and learn how to use it.
If someone gets this version and not the one with a guide and base, make sure you have a surface that will provide enough friction to keep the rubberized base stable when the stone is wet and just be as consistent as possible with the angle and pressure. I found 10-15 swipes on each side was enough to make blades with visibly rough edges smooth and sharp once I got thee motion and angle down. I highly recommend getting this or the "upgraded" versions.
Top reviews from other countries
It's a stone so not much to say there. One side is 400, the 1000 grit. I have no way of measuring the grit, but the 400 is relatively coarse and the 1000 is finer for finishing. There's a rubbery base to prevent slipping but it's kind of tight and hard to get on the stone and still slips around a but. There's also a smaller levelling stone to lap the main stone.
To get started, you soak the stone for about 10 minutes - it will bubble. I then drew a light grid on the surface in pencil and used the levelling stone to even off the surface (it was pretty flat but slightly concave). I also beveled the edges a bit to prevent chipping.
I sharpened a 7" chef knife using a blade guide. The 400 grit removed material fairly quickly to take out chips and start an edge. The 1000 grit refined it further. While sharpening I had too add sprinkle some water on the stone regularly (every 30-45 seconds) to keep the stone lubricated and wash away swarth from the blade and eroded stone.
The first attempt was successful and gave me a much sharper blade after about 15 minutes. Obviously my technique could improve and skill is up to the user, but the stone definitely worked as I hoped. I'll probably pick up a 6000 grit stone soon to get a really fine edge on blades.
I bought these stones to sharpen several kitchen knives which were extremely dull. I have only sharpened one knife so far but the stones do the job very well considering this is my first time using a sharpening stone to sharpen kitchen knives.
They seem like they have enough quality to get good results on but not so expensive that they are at risk of a novice sharpener like my self damaging them through poor technique.
