Product Description
The Tanita RD-901 InnerScan PRO incorporates the very latest FDA cleared Multi Frequency bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) technology, the first consumer body composition monitor in the world to do so. Multi frequency testing provides an additional level of accuracy to the body composition analysis process by providing essential data of a person’s intracellular and extracellular status, and is generally only found on professional grade models. Analysis of the cellular data allows us to determine the quality of the muscle tissue, in addition to mass. A high score represents a higher density of muscle fiber, with less fat and connective tissue. A low score indicates the muscle fiber is thinner and fewer compared to other substances.
The advanced technology found within the Tanita RD-901 InnerScan PRO provides an in-depth analysis of 11 body composition readings. Measurements include: Weight, Body Fat, Muscle Mass, Muscle Quality Score, Physique Rating, Bone Mass, Visceral Fat, Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), Metabolic Age, Total Body Water, and BMI. No other consumer Bluetooth scale offers such a wide array of capability, making the Tanita RD-901 InnerScan PRO the world’s most accurate home-use body composition monitor. BIA is quick and non-invasive, and is one of the most thorough and reliable ways to measure body composition, clinically comparable to DXA (dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry) and hydrostatic (underwater) weighing.
The Tanita RD-901 Innerscan PRO uses radio wireless Bluetooth technology, monitoring the effectiveness of a weight loss or physical activity program has never been easier. Compatible with Healthy Edge Mobile (free download), so your smart phone will record, analyze, and graph your results. And the platform features a color coded LCD display to quickly analyze your results and let you know if you’re in the desired zones. The Tanita RD-901 InnerScan PRO has a weight capacity of 440 pounds, and operates for greater than 1 year on four AA batteries (included).
Individuals with an electronic medical implant such as a pacemaker should not use a scale that employs bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) as it passes a low-level electrical signal through the body which may interfere with the operation of the implant. Pregnant women should only use the weight function, other functions are not intended for use when pregnant.
Advanced Body Composition with Bluetooth
The Tanita RD-901 InnerScan PRO uses the very latest multi frequency technology to provide the most accurate analysis yet possible, while also sending this data to your smart phone for detailed review and analysis.
Comprehensive Measurements
The RD-901 InnerScan PRO provides 11 body composition measurements, the most thorough analysis yet available on a consumer scale, with clinical accuracy normally only found on professional models. 1 Weight, 2 BMI, 3 Body Fat, 4 Muscle Mass, 5 Muscle Quality, 6 Physique Rating, 7 Bone Mass, 8 Visceral Fat, 9 BMR, 10 Metabolic Age, 11 Body Water.
Multi Frequency Technology
Multi frequency testing provides an additional level of accuracy to the body composition analysis process by providing essential data of a person’s intracellular and extracellular status.
Muscle Quality
Analysis of the cellular data allows the RD-901 InnerScan PRO to determine the quality of the muscle tissue, in addition to mass. Knowing muscle quality and muscle mass is essential for training analysis and monitoring injuries.
Color Assesments
The RD-901 InnerScan PRO analyzes your data and provides a color coded judgement of your measurements. This analysis is based on over 20 years of Tanita clinical research, and descends from our professional models.

The iPhone app syncs with the Apple health kit, and there are Sync Solver apps that allow you to send the data to the FitBit app and/or export to a CSV file. Note: only Weight, body fat %, lean body mass and BMI.
Using the scale is easy and doesn’t require you to open up the app every time you use it. You can sync the data anytime, the scale holds the data until you connect. The Bluetooth connection works great and I don’t feel like I’m missing a WiFi connection - the app does the step of the WiFi.
Overall, I am very happy with this scale.
It would certainly be nice if the app or website allowed you to download all the data to a CSV file and I don’t understand why this feature isn’t available. The ability to use Sync Solver, Apple Health Kit and the FitBit app partially make up for that shortcoming.
Cons: the app lacks style. It's just very bland. Doesn't show measurements ranges or any additional info.
Have had an older (still available) Tanita Ironman scale that measured weight, body fat, hydration percent, caloric burn prediction and fitness level for years (at least 5 and probably closer to 10 years), but it didn't send the data anywhere, so I was always manually recording the data.
Love that I can print output and download my data.
Both scales are consistent in the above measurements. I trust the Tanita accuracy. Amazing that they have a setup step to adjust for gravitational pull depending on where your are on the earth.
BTW, if you are tracking bodyfat there is one fact you should be aware of: there appears to be a direct inverse correlation to bodyfat measurements to hydration. For example, when I weigh myself every morning, my BF will be 15-17% with hydration at 52-54%. In the evening, when my hydration is 56-58% my BF will be 11-13%. If I hit close to 59%, my BF can drop to 10.3% and in the morning if my hydration is really low like 51.8%, I can see a BF level of 19%.All measurements are while naked. I have found the hydration BF correlations to be the case on the Fitbit scale also. Not a big deal (to me at least), just be aware of it and don't criticize the scale - I think it is the nature of the technology. Frankly, I think my real BF is closer to 14-15%. However, it appears that the Fitbit scale adjusts better for hydration levels - BF swings are significantly less.
Again, setup can be onerous, but stick with it and read the online manual and follow the instructions (and perhaps look at the Q&As at the back to resolve issues), it will finally be right and you shouldn't encounter further issues.
I was also drawn to the fact that this scale has an app and you can collect your readings and sync with Apple Health. I'm not using the American version of the app but rather the European version as I have another model of Tanita (the much more expensive RD-545HR, which is slightly more accurate) in Europe. The app was easy to install and pair with Bluetooth. So no issues there.
As a basic scale i.e. measuring your overall weight, it works just fine but that's the only reading that is accurate. The problems start with the accuracy of Body Fat and Muscle Mass which according to a DEXA scan I did recently under measured my Body Fat by a whopping 6%. It under measured by Muscle Mass by 7lb, my Visceral Fat by 8lb, and my Bone Mass by 2lb. So depending on whether you believe in the accuracy of a DEXA scan then by that measure, the Tanita scale is far from inaccurate.
Other than weight I think this scale will enable you to track rough trends in your body composition but not for exact composition, the most important one for me being Visceral Fat.
In hindsight, I think it's probably a better idea to go with a much cheaper scale and use the money you saved to get the occasional DEXA scan.
