DJI Goggles - FPV Drone Accessory (A Quick Look)
Jamie Penney
Product Description
SEE A DIFFERENT WORLD
The DJI Goggles are comfortable goggles designed for seamless FPV flying with DJI products. [1] They combine a pair of large ultra-high quality screens, long-range,low lag wireless connectivity, and direct control of photo and video capture. With Intelligent Flight Modes like ActiveTrack, TapFly, Terrain Follow, Cinematic Mode andTripod mode, a totally new flying dimension is created.
DJI Goggles are able to offer both 720p/60fps and close range 1080p/30fps viewing [2] with an extremely low latency of just 110ms. [3] Through DJI’s OcuSync wireless transmission system, up to four devices can be connected to the Mavic Pro simultaneously. [4] Antennas built into the headband ensure 360° of coverage, offering a reliable connection even if the aircraft is flying behind you. [5] Share the fun of immersive flying with friends by giving them a bird’s eye view of the world as you pilot their experience
HIGH RESOLUTION
Typical “2K” screens inside the goggles are split into two 1280x1440 sections, one for each eye. When viewing a 16:9 image, some sections are further cut off, leaving only a quarter of the available pixels. DJI Goggles have two 1920x1080 screens providing more than twice the amount of pixels of a typical 2K single screen.
OPTICAL DESIGN
DJI Goggles use a beam splitter to display an image in front of each eye, as well as polarization to prevent any image overlap. This allows it to create genuineFull HD 1920x1080 resolution per eye. When used with the large aperture aspheric lens, an 85° field of view per eye is created for maximum immersion.
HEAD TRACKING
Your head movements control both aircraft yaw and camera tilt in Head Tracking Flight mode as with remote controller sticks. All you need to dois turn left or right to yaw left or right, and straighten your head to stop turning. In Head Tracking Gimbal mode only the gimbal will move without affecting yaw.
INTELLIGENT FLIGHT
DJI Goggles are a perfect pair with DJI's new Intelligent Flight Mode: Fixed-Wing Mode. In this mode, the aircraft doesn’t turn left or right but instead flies forward with enoughrotational movement for realistic flight simulation. Combined with Head Tracking Mode, you can use your head to control the Mavic Pro for a fully realized flight experience. An AR trajectory prediction feature in Fixed-Wing Mode makes using this mode in complex environments safer. Other Intelligent Flight Modes include Terrain Follow, ActiveTrack, TapFly, Cinematic Mode and Tripod Mode.
[1] DJI Goggles supports Mavic Pro, Phantom 4 series and Inspire series. Some functions will be adapted for different DJI Products.
[2] HD mode: 1080p/30fps: near-field with no interference; 720p/30fps: at long range or with interference; Smooth Mode: 720p/60fps
[3] Using the Mavic Pro, stream wirelessly at 720p/60fps and record video at 720p/120fps
[4] For Mavic Pro with two pairs of DJI Goggles and two RCs only
[5] The use of a spotter is essential when wearing DJI Goggles. The aircraft should not fly beyond the spotter’s line of sight.

Build quality and presentation is top notch. They are comfortable and not too heavy. A little known fact is that they can be connected to your computer/ TV/ Playstation/ Xbox if you have a Usb to HDMI adapter.
Oops.
I really wanted this thing to be as stellar as many of the youtubers (of questionable allegiances) and have a great picture, a nice fit, easy to use. Such a great idea! And so cool to have fly/gimbal tracking, and the other features.
Nope.
First, the fit:
The design of the fit is fundamentally flawed. There is the front of the band, with a little top shelf. So you put it on the front of your noggin, spongy front on your forehead, fine, and the little lip, resting on top of you head. Fine.
Then, you slip the back of the headband down over the crown on the back of your head, so it won't get pulled up.
Great.
Then the screen rotates down to you eyes. About 1" too high for your eyes, well, at least mine. So I have to look up at it. All they needed to do was make the little lip adjustable for different heads! So easy!
But no, so it doesn't align with my eyes when fitting my head, or it aligns with my eyes, but slips off due to high torque forwards.
The picture:
It's pretty mediocre. I have the Smart Controller, and the picture there is much much better. I don't think the resolution is really adequate.
Focus:
I use reading glasses. The ones I use for reading at a distance of about 1 foot or so, are not powerful enough to get this picture in focus for me. The image is like something floating 8-9" in front of your eyes. Why? Is that utilitarian for anyone past teenage years? (Far far past those years for me!! Dang it)
On the upside, the registration, firmware update, and linking all went exactly as advertised, albeit a little long, but that's not so bad.
But all that going well, hardly compensates for fitting poorly, impossible to focus my eyes, on the really mediocre picture.
So close! If they had just done a little more, a very very small amount more, these could have been pretty cool.
But, no. Sadly.
They are going back....
Here's a caveat though; even though these goggles have adjustable focus, their focus is mechanically tied to the diopter adjustment which isn't optimal, so for best results, your eyes MUST be able to focus on an object held 9 inches away, or you're going to need reading glasses to use these.
My vision is really messed-up, with one eye focusing at about 9 inches, and the other around 18 inches, so I set the diopter adjustment "fully-wide" and I can see well enough to still love these a lot!
HDMI movies are great with these, and I think their built-in sound is really good, although others call it "tinny".
They do seem to have trouble downloading footage from the Mavic, and placing the SD card from the Mavic into these goggles does not work. In fact, I have had no luck getting these to play media from an SD card, but that's not why I bought them.
