I go through small streams regularly, like halfway to ankle deep, and have not had a leak. When they get muddy I just dip my feet in a clean stream and they're clean (enough) fast!
The outside of the front is absorbent like regular fabric, and I feel like when it is wetted out that it may theoretically inhibit the breathability, but I have not observed this in practice. The rest of the shoe is apparently breathable enough to the point where this "wetted out" portion doesn't affect the overall breathability. The waterproof layer is deeper so no water penetrates to socks. I haven't noticed any appreciable weight increase while wet either. So, absolutely no complaints and I highly recommend!
The first time wearing these boots, the upper ankle support of the shoe just kept digging into my skin to the point i started to bleed. I had to cut my hiking trip short and change my shoes. It’s no big deal as I am a big fan of Inov-8 and I really do have respect for the company.

Unfortunately, the toe-box of these hiking boots is rather narrow, so I found that I should have ordered a full cm bigger, ie 28.5 cm. If you do any serious hiking and don't order a full cm bigger, you will likely find that your toes get smashed up when going on extended downhill stretches, because of the narrow, tight toe box.
My toes took a real beating. Order a full cm larger.
