I will say that later in the review I talk about my LG OLED TV being peak performance, and I think now compared to the HDR Peak Brightness of this monitor I now choose this one. Would I still love an OLED Desktop Monitor at 4k/144hz with 1,000 nit peak brightness? Yes... who wouldn't? Anyway, just thought I would update for people reading reviews past my 1-2 week "OMG I LOVE THIS" review.
What can I say about this monitor? It's pretty much ticked all my check boxes for a display.
NO ASSEMBLY REQUIRED!! - I know right, it's crazy that literally you just take it out of the box and hook up power and video and you're ready to go... (yes if you want the cool shade around it you need to assemble that.
Great Color
Great Brightness
Great Response
Great HDR
To be clear, I suppose I "won" the panel lottery that people have been commenting on because I checked mine for issues that others were worried about but didn't see them.
My main gaming monitor has been a Dell 1440p 144hz VA Panel. The color was okay when calibrated and you sat in front of it. Mostly got it for the 144hz refresh. My backup display was my 65" 4K LG OLED TV from 2017. I basically want the color and vibrancy of my OLED and the speed of the 144hz. This is DAMN close to perfect and I would say the BEST implementation of HDR I've ever seen. The other monitor I was gaming on was an LG 27UL650-W, this was a cheap (sub $500) "HDR" monitor I picked up because my other Dell 4K ULtrasharp was bought before HDMI 1.4 so it can't do 4k/60hz making my few console gaming experiences terrible at 1080p/60 vs 4k/30?
The Division 2, Resident Evil 2/3, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Shadow of the Tomb Raider heck even UHD-Movies look amazing to me.
Note that you can go 4K/10-12bit/60hz and I believe to go 120hz+ you have to drop to 8bit. Which gaming wise it still looks amazing.
Features in the menu are wonderful and allow you to save custom presets for quick access. It has an OSD (on screen display) that will show the current refresh of the monitor...though I'm not sure why it would be needed statically up there.
A cool feature is that the RGB's will either be set to a color you want or you can have it kind of do ambiance and change with the image on screen. Gaming at night is fun.
If there's one negative about it..hmm, well I dunno, your reading a week old purchase review. Oh, there's what appears to be a marketing sticker on the top right when you open the box. I thought it was a ripped screen protector but when you took the tape off it just makes a little fold up display as if you saw it in-store telling you all the cool features.
There is one thing to do, if you're not playing HDR games or watching HDR movies, you will be upset with the out of the box brightness. Just hop in the menu and go to "Peak white (nits)" and adjust to your comfort. Be careful because white is effing white!
I tried out the Acer Predator XB273K Gpbmiipprzx but that was horrible because there was a lot of backlight bleed. It also requires 2 DP cables to use 144hz mode which didn't work very well and was buggy. It didn't have a true G-SYNC module so you can't use 144hz + GSYNC. That monitor is useless.
The biggest difference between this model and the previous Sb model is that they finally fixed the loud fan + there is GSYNC for HDMI. I had the Sb (refurb from Acer) which had horrible backlight bleed so I decided to spend the extra money to buy brand new. The new Pb unit does not have backlight bleed.
Here are the pros and cons...
PROS:
-144hz + True GSYNC Ultimate (not adaptivesync junk) [It does use 4:2:2 subsampling so colors are not full and vibrant]
-144hz 4:2:2 10-bit subsampling is improved compared to the prior Sb model. Text is pretty sharp on desktop and I honestly cannot tell there is color compression.
-98hz will allow you to display full 10-bit RGB color space (great for video and picture editing)
-HDR
-384 local LED dimming allows for very good black levels
-Fan is quiet
-Colors are accurate and calibrated at the factory (comes with calibration sheet)
CONS:
-Price, expensive (but you get what you pay for)
-1st unit arrived DOA and the joystick control was sloppy (bad QC on Acer's part), waste my time
Have been running this monitor for hours on end, The cooling fan has been barley audible, A lot of reviews I have read talked about cooling fan being loud, This one seems not to have that Issue at all.
I just wanted to add this, I have a PS5 and a Xbox Series X, Unfortunately this high end monitor does not support HDMI 2.1 so I will not be connecting them to it, I did not buy it for my new consoles anyway but I just wanted to let people know who were thinking about buying this for the new consoles they will have to wait until mid 2021 for the updated 2.1 monitors to be released for use with new consoles. It's been over a year and a half with this monitor and now that I added a Asus 3080ti, I can get full use out of everything this monitor has to offer and more and it still performs perfectly after a year and a half, I wanted 2 more with my 3090 to see if it could handle all 3, But it seems there are no more to be found unless you want to go to Ebay and pay $3000 for them. But you know the 400nit ones are great as well and a little more easier on the eye's and half the price or less so I'm going to get 3 of those for my 3090 instead and see if I can melt the insane video card.
Update: 10-4-23
After over 3 years, I can truly say this has been a stellar 4k monitor, I have not had any issues whatsoever, the best IPS monitor panel I have ever owned, running a RTX 4090 on it now and it's just awesome. no regrets spending 1200 on this in 2020.
