**See section at bottom of review if you are are a Charter Spectrum streaming cable customer. What I like:—Beautiful screen, stunning colors as expected. Having a ‘4K X-Reality PRO engine’ just sounds fancy but what it actually does is analyze and process data to enrich images’ textures and clarity using intelligent dual-database processing, also upscales full HD video to near 4K. Dolby Vision compatibility for deep black levels and vibrant colors. It also features a calibration mode for original content on Netflix.—Sound is really good. I’ve been enjoying listening to Spotify; you can get some good volume out of it without distortion. Even though it’s only 10+10 watts it seems more powerful. Maybe it has something to do with the touted ‘S-Force Front Surround’ technology. I think the sound is more than adequate for anything we watch on TV, as well as music, but my husband still insisted on hooking up our old-school Denon receiver and surround speakers.—Unlike others, I really like the remote control. It’s not perfect and could use a backlight (especially at this price) and customizable buttons, but it’s sleek looking, has a good weight and fits nicely in my hand.My take on price and Alexa:—PRICE, wow, this 49” (actually 48.5) TV is way up there. Even though this Sony is Full Array vs. Edge Lit, and has an amazing 3840 x 2160 resolution (120Hz)....when comparing side to side with our older Sharp Aquos - 1920 x 1080 (240Hz), and watching 4K content, I don’t see a huge enough difference to justify the huge price. If you are into movies that focus on amazing special effects, or spend a lot of time accessing 4K content and the action is your prime focus, watch a lot of live sports, or if you simply want the latest tech, then I can see this Sony TV being worth the price.—ALEXA compatibility? Somewhat. We are used to using Alexa, have lots of smart devices connected, routines running everyday as well as individual timers so we’re pretty well versed in setting things up. At first we couldn’t even get the Alexa setup process on the TV to finish...each time it would tell us something went wrong. The skill was there, the TV listed as a device, but we couldn’t use it. It asks you to name your device, and since we didn’t have any other TVs controlled by Alexa we kept it simple and named it ‘TV’. Well that ended up being the problem. You have to designate a room name, so it is now named ‘Living Room TV’ even though we do not have any actual rooms set up in our Alexa, and Alexa does respond when we simply say TV...just stupid. Bottom line, it sort of works, but may not be worth the trouble. It’s very consistent with basics like on/off/volume up-down-mute, but anything else is a struggle. For instance, you are supposed to be able to launch your apps through Alexa. You say “Alexa, launch Prime Video on Sony TV” - she will then say “I can’t do that on Android Sony TV, would you like use your Android Sony TV?” You say yes and it will open even though she just said she can’t do it! A few built-in apps will open, using that scenario, like Netflix, Prime, YouTube, Plex, but not others. Not worth the time or trouble. Spotify won’t play any of your requested playlists, you have to specifically ask for a type of music, and it makes a best guess and starts playing one of Spotify’s many channels that it considers part of that genre. That’s great if you’re not fussy about individual songs, it is pretty cool to just tell her to play music on the TV and she will turn it on, bring up Spotify and tells you what she chose. I have my music all in playlists so I’d rather just control it from my phone. I don’t have any other music services so can’t say how they would work.**For CHARTER SPECTRUM streaming service subscribers:If Spectrum is your cable provider and you are using their cable streaming service like we are, THERE IS NO APP. Currently their app is only available on select Samsung TVs and TVs with built-in ROKU. So you have to purchase a Roku box, Apple TV, etc. to be able to watch your Spectrum cable streaming service (and have to deal with a second remote). All other content we use, Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu, YouTube, Plex, NHL, MLB, ESPN, Spotify, and more, is either built into the TV or has an app available. We bought a $40 ROKU for now, but it’s frustrating to have to buy a device just to be able to access our cable channels when everything else is built in to the TV. Casting/mirroring SHOULD be an option as we have the Spectrum TV app on both our android phone and iPhone, but mysteriously all video playing on Spectrum is blacked out, audio is there as well as the whole directory and guide, just no video. The video works on everything else we mirrored/casted so it’s not our devices or the TV. We’re waiting to hear back from Spectrum support as to why no video.Spectrum could not say if there were plans in place to develop an app for Android TV. Their streaming service hasn’t been around for very long but you’d think they would want to make their app available for all smart TVs being sold.

The more time I spend with this TV the more satisfied I become and if you compare cost to performance it can actually be seen as good value (although not the absolute best). If cost is no factor you could get slightly better contrast in the OLED TVs or higher resolution in 8K but I have not personally felt at any point I am left wanting more. It can get brighter than most OLEDs so while you don't get perfect contrast you get an image that still pops and has great highlights. Unfortunately, the factory settings need a little tweaking to get the most of it's capabilities which I recommend searching the internet to understand if you don't want to send it in for professional calibration. The strength of this TV seems to be if you like watching movies. The upscaling has brought new life to my 1080P blue rays. The motion is great and after a few tweaks the colors and contrast look rich but also realistic. As someone who does not own a sound bar I am also impressed with the sound. It sounds fairly full and present instead of the typical built ins that sound like the audio is traveling through a hallway before it gets to your ears. There is a small amount of light bleed in the blacks near bright lights even with the local dimming but it does not distract me much so it must be well controlled. The remote is very underwhelming but it works. Gamers will want to purchase a TV with 4K 120FPS capability to be future proof but right now most people are unable to play content at that framerate in 4K. This TV has very few flaws and while it may not sit at the pinnacle of TVs you can buy today, it does perform well in almost every way so it is great as a sum of its parts. It is hard not to be satisfied with this TV. Buy with confidence if this fits just within your budget and be excited for a great viewing experience. If you are looking for the very best regardless of cost do your research as there are many great options.

    1996 - Sony Trinitron KV-27S20 (27", CRT) first TV I ever bought
    2007 - Sony Bravia KDL-40V2500 (40", CFL LCD)
    2020 - Vizio M437-G0 (43", 4k HDR) R.I.P.
    2020 - Sony Bravia X950H

This year I decided to make the jump to 4k HDR. The picture quality on even the cheapest 4K HDR televisions is so much better than my old CFL LCD panel that I decided to go with a 43" Vizio M quantum (M437-G0). I was satisfied with it for the price, but after spending some time with it I began to understand the importance of brightness, color accuracy, and local dimming algorithms, not to mention motion. I'm not at all interested in keeping up with the Jonses, so despite its shortcomings I was willing to live with the Vizio until it was totally obsolete (as I had done with my two televisions prior).

Unfortunately my Vizio was broken in a freak accident involving a projectile fountain pen (don't ask), which provided me an opportunity to correct my mistake and buy Sony. I didn't buy the X950H due to blind brand loyalty, but rather because it's clearly the best 49" LCD available. I considered a 48" OLED from LG, and while the OLED picture is noticeably better in terms of black level and uniformity, when watching content (rather than static test patterns) the difference is nowhere near as major as the difference between the X950H and a budget set. In other words, I feel the X950H is worth the premium over a cheap set for anybody, while OLED is worth the premium depending on certain factors.

TL;DR: The X950H has amazing picture quality. In the store everything looks same-y, so it's easy to be allured by unbelievably cheap sets. Don't make the same mistake I did, just buy the Sony.

By the way, my Sony TVs from 1996 and 2007 are still working as good as new. My 1996 Trinitron is even back in service as part of a retro gaming rig. Tubular, dude!

Love the TV, love the Pic. A little difficult to adjust the picture; however, I won't knock the 5 stars for that.......worth every penny once you find the right settings...and you can find lots of starting points on the web. When we first turned it on, it was quite blurry. Some adjustment, firmware updates, and a reboot, and it turned amazing. If you take the time to work with the picture, it will turn out amazing........and at that point, I highly recommend this TV. Works great with Apple TV 4k, too! Sony does it, again!

This is a great television. I was looking for television to place in our bedroom to replace an existing 40” entry level Sony. I read a ton of reviews and landed on the 49” X950 now it doesn’t have the Xwide view featured in other models of the same line. It has access to Bravia bonus features, Google television with Netflix, Amazon Prime, and much more. The remote can use voice control and was able to control my cable box. I cannot say how much I love this television.
