Sony's flagship Bravia LED doesn't disappoint
    5 Stars
Sony's flagship Bravia LED doesn't disappoint
First off, despite the ability to make it that way, this is not going to be an overly technical review, I know a lot of people just want to know if this TV is worth the money. While there's no short answer to that, hopefully this review will help. This TV is an upgrade from a Sony 55" 950G.Other TVs I considered: Samsung Q90 and TCL 8 Series. I passed on both of them mainly because of many reviews saying that both had varying degrees of uniformity issues. I had no desire to play "panel lottery".Viewing Habits: Like a lot of people, I'm a cable cutter, so nearly all of my viewing is either by streaming or hard copy (Blu-ray, DVD) from a Sony UP-X800MkII 4K player. Although seldom used, basic (480) cable is attached for occasionally viewing local news, but this input is not reviewed here due to limited experience with it and the generally poor quality of the signal.Viewing Area: Screen is roughly eight feet from the main seating area. Daytime viewing is quite bright, while nightime viewing is generally fairly dark outside of low ambient lighting.Picture Quality: The quality of the picture on this set is equal to, and often better than, the 950G it replaced. Colors are very good out of the box, and get better with some minor adjustments to the settings. I will say upfront that, as on the 950G, Netflix Calibrated Mode is generally a waste of time, leaving the picture somewhat dull and lifeless. All non Dolby Vision content was set up using the Custom picture setting - both Dolby Vision and Custom required very little messing with picture settings to get them to my liking. The brightness of the set really lends itself to High Dynamic Range (HDR) content in general, and specifically with Dolby Vision content. Disney+, Netflix and Amazon HD and UHD content look outstanding, and even with the compression often present on Netflix content, Dolby Vision encoded content looks great, as seen in the picture from Our Planet. Viewing content from the 4K player, things get even better - since I have a good size library of DVDs, I started there. While some movies were limited somewhat by a questionable conversion to digital to begin with, all were upscaled very well. A lot of it will naturally depend on how much effort went into the digitizing of the film in question, but the TV itself does an awesome job with the better quality movies. I generally leave any signal processing off, but turning on Digital Noise Reduction on did improve the picture quality on poorer quality DVD transfers. Blu-ray movies are handled even better of course, and films like Pirates of the Caribbean 3, October Sky and Dances with Wolves really pop on the screen. 4K/UHD movies look nothing short of outstanding - Midway (2009), Apollo 13, Avengers Endgame and Batman (1989) all look outstanding, with the dark purple jackets of Joker's henchmen not getting lost at all on the screen as it does on many lesser quality TVs. The Local Dimming feature is definitely improved over the 950G. The starfield on Apollo 13 offer was crushed if you set Local Dimming to High, whereas the 950H does not suffer from this problem. The 950H has Sony's wide angle viewing on all but the 49" model, and it's a welcome improvement. You're still not going to get the wide viewing performance of an OLED, but it's helpful up to about 30° off center viewing.Audio: Sony has touted the 950H as having greatly improved sound over previous models, and overall, I'd have to agree. Does it outperform a decent soundbar? No. It does, however, give a much wider soundstage than most flat screens and for that, I give them a B for effort. While the sound lacks bottom end punch, it does offer one the alternative of late night viewing without disturbing others in the household, or, if you're like me, other tenants.Grey Uniformity: Every LED TV out there will have some form of grey uniformity (dirty screen effect or DSE) problems, ranging from very bad, to barely noticeable, the 950H falls into the latter category. The DSE it does have is some minor vignetting in the extremes of each corner that I've yet to notice in real world viewing.User Interface/Operating System: As with the 950G, the 950H uses the Android UI. I'd have to guess that there was a hardware change from the G series to the H series, as the H seems a little snappier in response and load times. The Android UI, overall, is a pleasant experience, and offers most streaming apps that the average user will want. It doesn't offer quite the plethora of apps that Roku does, but overall, that's not a downside to me.Remote Control: Not much to say here other than that the remote is well laid out and your fingers quickly learn where to land to execute the desired function. Definitely an improvement over past Sony offerings. That said, it is a bit large and the button count could definitely be pared down.Build Quality: The easiest thing to say here is, 'It's a Sony". You aren't going to find quite the quality you'll find in Sony's Master Series, but the dark metal panel surround is very thin and the construction is solid. From the front, the first words that come to mind are "simple yet elegant". The sticking point for me is the legs. While they look nice enough, the cable management is nearly non existent when compared to the 950G. Add to this that mine came with some screw holes that were not tapped all the way through. While this seems like a minor complaint, when you consider the weight these legs are responsible for, not to mention the price point of the TV, there should have been some more thought given to the design. Conclusion: Unless you happen across a Sony or LG OLED at a great price, this TV is probably what you're looking for, the only exception would be if your priority is next gen gaming since the 950H, unlike its 900H sibling, does not offer HDMI 2.1 or VRR. For those who are primarily movie lovers (both hard copy and streaming), the 950H is clearly the better choice.Pros+ Brightness to handle HDR content+ Great color, even out of the box+ Amazing upscaling+ Includes Dolby Vision+ Decent soundstage+Improved viewing angles over most other VA type panelsCons- Limited app choices when compared to Roku UI- Stand is fussy to assemble- Poor cable management- No HDMI 2.1
