ULT off - depending on your EQ, the headphones will sound like that, with no boost to the bass, but still present
ULT 1- Adds a nice deep boost to the bass that you can feel while keeping your eq consistent!
ULT 2- the headphones just turned into subwoofers!, boosting the bass to where you now are feeling the music!, its incredible!
Noise cancelation and aware modes are right up there with the top of the line Xm5. Even with the bass at its peak performance, there is no distortion when either of these modes are on even at high volumes!
At $199 retail, they are worth every penny!
Whenever on sale, snag a pair for sure!

Finally someone made some bass forward cans for us bass lovers. If you want high end fidelity and super wide sound stages, look elsewhere (and pay 2x). I have some Bose Ultras and while they are good sounding headphones with bass forward tuning they’re still lacking the depth. These ULTs have the depth but not the sound stage as the ultras. The build quality is mediocre at best and could probably be sold half the cost and I expect tons of sales on these.
The sound quality is good. It’s fun. It’s better than Beats and the Bose Ultras. Definitely more bass than APM but not the same sonic fidelity. Needs more listening time but my first impression is tight, controlled strong bass. ULT 1 vs ULT 2 is actually clear bass at 0 or 10 (odd) but does some additional magic behind the scenes. Sony put a bigger driver in these then XM5. I can’t get the XM5 to sound like these so that 40mm driver works and handles the bass well. I wouldn’t listen to level 2 much but level 1 tuned with the EQ actually produces awesome sound, again with a narrow stage.
I haven’t test calls or conferences or outdoors yet. Overall initial first listening is these are not overall better then XM5 (they shouldn’t) but do sound great and the XM5 I felt had poor drivers for all the amazing tech in them. The V1 handles the processing well with no distortion.
Will update review once I listen and test some more. Biggest thing here is ULT and bigger (arguably better) drivers. Sony did good.
Noise cancellation is great, and the transparency level is adjustable.
I find the headphones to be comfortable. That said, they have all of the strengths and weaknesses of around-the-ear, closed-back headphones. For example, I wouldn't want to wear them while exercising outside. on a hot, humid day.

Controls on the headphones.
Left side controls
AN/AMB:
- Press once for Noise Reduction, to remove outside sounds
- Press again for Ambient Noise to hear outside sounds
The AN feature is useful in a noisy environment such as on a plane to remove the noise while watching a movie or listening to music, and the AMB feature allows you to hear outside noise while headphones are on.
Power button:
- Press and hold 2 seconds to turn On/Off
ULT button: For Bass level
- Press once for level 1, twice for level 2
I find there is a slight difference in BASS, but not really noticeable.
USB-C port:
- Charging port for the internal battery (USB-A to USB-C cable included)
Cable is only 6 inches long, so headphones will need to be close to the USB power source.
3.5mm audio port:
- Standard audio port for use with legacy devices that don’t have Bluetooth capability. (4 ft. Phono cable included)
This is useful on a flight to connect to legacy media devices of the plane enabling the use of the AN feature of the headphones.
Right side controls:
The right side headphone has a touchpad to control the following functions.
- Double tapping once stops play, double tapping again resumes play
- Swipe back for previous track
- Swipe forward for next track
- Swipe Up and hold to raise volume
- Swipe Down and hold to lower volume
- Hold finger on touchpad to access voice commands (ex. Siri on iOS)
- Place hand on touchpad to quickly access ambient sound which lowers audio volume to hear someone talk (without having to remove Headphones), remove hand restores audio volume.
Using the touchpad functions is easy but requires some patience and practice.
Note. When removing the headphones, audio will automatically stop and resume when placed back on your head.
Before using the headphones, I fully charged the internal battery and installed the Sony Headphones Connect app for iOS, (the app is available for both iOS and Android) and I signed up for a free Sony account to register the Headphones.
I launched app on my phone and pressed power button 2 seconds to turn on Headphones and then 7 seconds to pair with my phone.
Note: 2 devices can be simultaneously linked once paired.
The Headphones options in the app has Status, Sound, System and Services tabs to provide information and configuration options for the Headphones. The Activity option in the app has tabs to log your listening history, daily use, safe listening and badge rewards for using features in the app.
Once settings in the app are configured to your tastes, it is not required to actually use the Headphones, but useful to have.
I’m an avid music lover of all genres and these Headphones provide a great listening experience with clear sounds and Massive Bass. With these on, I can enjoy my music without disturbing anyone.
The battery life is very good (at least 30 hours) which is great.
I have a fairly large head and the Headphones adjust well on my ears and provide a comfortable fit.
When I travel by plane, the Noise Reduction feature is useful to cut outside sounds when listening to music and/or movies on my phone or tablet. The wired phono cable is useful for times I want to Connect to legacy devices that do not have Bluetooth capability.
Overall extremely satisfied with these Headphones.

Overall extremely satisfied with these Headphones.
Here’s a few things I like about them:
-They’re made well
-The earcups rotate nearly a full 180 degrees
-There’s a touch panel on the right earcup
-The physical buttons are tactile, and easy to tell when you’ve hit one
-They isolate noise pretty well, even without any noise cancelling enabled
-They feel well made
-the earcups create a good seal, even with glasses on
-The top headband is pretty comfortable,
And here’s what I don’t like about them:
-If you’re using them wired, the sound changes when they’re powered on, versus when they’re powered off (even with no tuning).
-The noise cancelling isn’t the greatest
-May be too bassy. I personally don’t like them without any tuning.
-The earcups get much hotter than other closed back headphones
-Buttons are pretty short travel
-No audio over USB-C
-It's hard to tell if they're still on, if they're not playing music. I often take them off, and if I forget to turn them off, it drains the battery and I can't use them the next time I pick them up.
-You can't use bluetooth while they're charging. The 3.5mm jack works while charging (but has some distortion, and the left earcup whines a bit. You also can't use any features, ie noise cancelling, it's only playback)
Honestly though, there’s only a couple things that I would be worried about if you’re planning on purchasing these. That would be the noise cancelling, and if you use them wired. The noise cancelling isn’t the best and has a lot of trouble when trying to remove the extremes, like a bird chirp (at the higher end), or a low rumble. It does an okay job at most things in between, but they’re not the top of the line. The other thing is if you intend on using these wired and wireless. If you like to change between the two, you’ll always have to remember to either turn off your headphones when you plug the 3.5mm jack in, or just always keep them on, or they’ll sound off.
Personally, I would wait to see what some more accomplished reviewers say, like rtings or somewhere you trust. If you’re wondering what I think, I think they’re a bit overpriced, at least here in Canada. They’re currently $350 CAD, where in the US they’re about $280 CAD. That’s a pretty big upcharge just for being in Canada. But let’s say that you can get them at $280, I would say they’re fine. They feel nice, and have a couple of creature comforts cheaper headphones won’t have. I would just say that you really do need to like bass if you’re looking to buy these.

I ordered the Sony headset in the color option "Black" they are accurate to what I expected color wise.
The over ear pieces are super comfortable, they go over my ears well and the cushions are comfortable. My husband who has a bigger head and bigger ears than me also tried out this headset and he found it comfortable and it also fit around his ears well, which is amazing. Often headsets don't fit around his ears comfortably and after a bit of time wearing them he finds them uncomfortable, these are great and he never had any discomfort at all.
I have used these for discord, gaming, listening to music and podcasts and for some video calls. They have went above and beyond in each of these experiences for me. The mic works incredible well for talking, no feedback, my friends were able to hear me well without any issues.
The headset will pause your music when you take them off and start your music or whatever else you are listening to once you put them back on. That is a good feature for me, I have had this on other headsets and I love it. It is convenient for me because I often have to take my headset off quickly and forget to pause what I am doing.
The noise cancelling and hear through are both amazing. I can put on the noise cancelling and not hear the movie my husband is watching or anything else around me. It does a fantastic job with that, which can be important when you are gaming and need to hear little sounds that mobs or bosses are making to know when to do certain things with your character.
You can use the touch commands on the right side of the head set to turn volume up and down, switch music tracks back or next and more. This is a pretty neat feature, easy to use and no additional buttons.
Connecting these to my laptop and phone was super easy. As soon as I turned them on my lap top was able to connect to them and I could use them right away. With the phone just add a new device through your Bluetooth options.
I have both my phone and my laptop connected, and I love that I don't have to unpair to switch between the two devices.
I really like that these come with a carry case to keep the headset safe when traveling. I often take my laptop places and I like having the hard top case to protect my headset in my laptop bag.
Over all a fantastic quality headset with great noise cancelling, really good mic and just over all a premium product.
I definitely recommend these.

I haven't found any glaring issues that make these a no-go, so I imagine people who like emphasized bass but also like being able to hear details in mids and highs will like these quite a bit.
I'll be honest that I don't really understand the appeal of drowning in bass, so I don't really have a comment on the ULT feature which boosts the bass to almost head-rattling levels.
Pros
+Very detailed sound which lets you hear lots of the smaller details in the song.
+Strong punchy bass that doesn't totally drown out the rest of the music.
+Battery life is pretty long, so you shouldn't have to charge every use. You can also hear the battery level when you short-press the power button which is pretty useful.
+The swiping touch controls work as you expect them to. When I try to use them, I can get the right action 99% of the time.
+The "pause when taken off" feature works consistently for me when I lower them down to rest around my neck.
+The noise cancelling is really good, as expected from Sony who is one of the leading companies in terms of noise cancelling technology.
+The pass-though feature lets you hear the sounds around you in a pretty life-like way.
Neutrals
=Materials don't feel totally premium with the plastic build, but it hasn't caused any issues.
=The pads are fairly comfortable even with glasses, but for me it does get a bit uncomfortable from the clamping force after something like 30 minutes of wearing it.
=The power button is placed where you might grab the headphones when adjusting or taking them off, so I've pressed it a lot accidentally. Thankfully, short press only tells you battery level.
=The default tuning is (obviously) more tuned towards bass, so the mids and highs are a bit pulled back. The mids and highs sound fine as they are, but they actually sound almost too flat and "boring". You might be able to make it sound better by playing with the EQ a bit in the Sony app.
Cons
-You can't customize the touch controls.
-No weather protection.
If you're not happy with the sound when you first get them, make sure to download the app and go through the setup. Also adjust the app's EQ settings as it will apply it to the headphones and everything you listen to will then have that EQ applied.
Design wise, these are very similar to the XM4's.
The graphics and branding on the each side may appeal to a younger crowd. Definitely less discrete than the XM4's. I like the ear padding in the ULT more than the XM4's as they've made it with two pieces stitched together compared to the XM4's single piece which makes the material bunch up.
I compared both with the same song, switching back and forth between the ULT and the XM4s.
The ULT has an obviously bassier sound, even with the ULT function turned off.
With ULT mode set to 1, you get a sense of deep bass, almost as if sitting in a car that has a decent subwoofer. You don't feel it in your chest but you what you hear is similar.
With ULT mode set to 2, it's a huge amount of deep bass - just on the edge of distorting but still controlled.
The headphones have similar functions to the XM4, has touch controls for skip forward/back/vol up/dn. You can also activate your assistant and it does have the function of pausing when you remove the headphone from your ears.
Considering these are priced lower than the XM5 and XM4, Sony may be targeting the younger or more cost conscious listener, getting them into the Sony system early on. I don't have a problem with this.. there's lot of other options out there at this price point, I think these would blow them away.
