FAQs

Who are RHA?

Founded in Glasgow, RHA draws inspiration from the UK's rich heritage of invention and engineering. Every component is engineered using advanced techniques and premium materials.

What is true wireless?

True or truly wireless is a term used to distinguish between earbuds without any external cables and other Bluetooth earbuds, earphones that may feature a neckband design for example.

Why use Bluetooth 5?

Bluetooth 5 offers greater connection speed, distance and bandwidth than previous generations of Bluetooth. Although this doesn’t impact audio quality directly, it does allow for greater connection strength and consistency in most environments.

Very, very disappointing earbuds, and grossly overpriced for what you get.
    1 Star
Very, very disappointing earbuds, and grossly overpriced for what you get.
Before I get into the nuts and bolts of the actual earbuds, let me start by describing the customer experience. I ordered these earbuds on Amazon, but they were coming directly from RHA as the seller; Prime shipping wasn't available on the day that I ordered them. I didn’t really pay attention to that, but I definitely should have. It took 18 DAYS for the earbuds to arrive. Then after using them for a few days and being thoroughly disappointed, I decided to return them. Amazon had to send a request to RHA for authorization for the return. Then I got authorization, but had to pay for return shipping myself and actually take them to the post office (not even a printable return label). The lesson here is to only order them if they’re coming from Amazon and are backed by Amazon’s guarantee. Now, on to the performance and quality of the RHA earbuds: The first thing you’ll notice about the RHAs upon taking them out of their box is that they look and feel kind of cheap. They feel much cheaper than the Bose Soundsport Free earbuds, and cheaper than the Samsung IconX earbuds, as well. I wasn’t a fan of the RHA case either; it was large, awkward to use, and tough to get the earbuds out of.The most glaring disappointment with the RHAs, noticeable immediately after putting them in my ears, was their poor sound quality; they sound thin & shallow, not deep and full. They just sound like cheap earbuds. I actually have a $20 pair of MPOW earbuds that sound slightly better, and the MPOWs aren’t exactly hi-fidelity. By way of another comparison, the Bose Soundsport Free earbuds have far, far better sound quality (but only if you are using them in a quiet environment; they suck at isolating you from ambient noise and were practically worthless in the gym). The Samsung IconX sound better than the RHAs, too.The next, and unforgivable, problem with the RHA earbuds is their fit. I tried multiple different eartips, including their memory foam tips, but they just never sealed effectively. They kept falling out of my ears. When I say falling out, I mean REALLY falling out, like onto the ground (see photos included for dramatic effect). They fell out multiple times when I was just standing around in between sets at the gym. I finally got tired of constantly trying to push them into my ear holes and picking them up off of the ground, so I just put them back in their case and finished each workout without them. To solve this problem, RHA is going to have to add little wings that tuck into the external part of your ears, like so many other manufacturers have done (e.g. Bose, which were never in danger of falling out, and Samsung).Of course, the poor fit of the RHAs also leads to poor sound. Lots of external noise passes right by them into your ears (this also was the unfortunate problem with the Bose, and the only reason that I didn’t keep them; the Samsung IconX earbuds isolate you from ambient noise much better than the Bose or the RHA).Connectivity is yet another big problem with the RHA’s. The second time I took them out of their case, neither earbud was connected to my iPhone. I had to manually go into the phone’s settings and tell the headphones to connect. Then the left one still wasn’t connected. Three days in a row I had to put the L one back in the case and pull it out again to persuade it to connect. Also, every minute or two while using the RHAs you hear the sound ping-pong left-right-left-right-left-right. They just have trouble staying in synch. There also are far too many drop-outs for headphones at this price. For comparison, the Bose Soundsport Free never failed to connect or dropped out in the two weeks that I used them (though sometimes they weren’t synched properly to moving lips in a podcast); the Samsung IconX only occasionally drop out for a second, mainly when I’m moving my head around (maybe not so good for runners) or when somebody walks in between the earbuds and my iPhone. These RHA earbuds would be overpriced at $50; their actual price of $169 is just ridiculous, and wholly unjustified. At least the Bose (also at $169) feel like very high quality headphones. These RHAs absolutely do not. Even though I haven’t packed the RHAs up for their return trip yet, I’ve switched back to my $25 MPOWs for the time being. At least they stay in my ears.I don’t think I’ve ever given a 1-star rating to any electronics purchase before, at least not that I can recall. However, given their cheap feel, clunky case, issues connecting, substandard audio quality, very poor fit, synch and drop-out issues, and their unjustified high price, these RHA earbuds deserve the lowest rating.
