In 1971, a mix of unemployed Boeing engineers, a leaky foam gardening pad, and the dream of better nights under the stars came together to change how we experience the outdoors forever.
By 1972, Cascade Designs was formed and began selling the Therm-a-Rest Standard 3/4 – the world’s first self-inflating sleeping pad.
The rest, as they say, is history.

It worked fine for back and side laying and with CCF pad under it, suspect it will be perfect for winter camping as well. Not the lightest, but easily as light as the Exped I had. The reason I switched from the Exped to this product is that the Exped has an annoying inflation nozzle and this does not.
Like all mats, it needs to be cared for to avoid punctures. I pack mine in a bivy rolled up with my sleep gear. It is never in direct contact with an outdoor surface.
Updated - I've spent 5 nights on it so far - down to 25ish two nights. Warm, very comfortable. Saw another on the trail as well and that guy loved it as well. It's a real commitment to blow it up, but once inflated worth every penny and ounce. This will be my go-to pad for the next couple of seasons, I suspect.
I’ve used it for 60 days without issue. For protection, I put a closed-cell pad under it (which is a great camp chair anyway).
Filling it with the provided pump sack is awkward, particularly in a small tent, like when it’s raining. It takes me about 2:30 to fill it in the best situation. So, you might want to consider an electric pump like the Tiny Pump X (https://a.co/d/8G9yABh ASIN B0B1M6GJ9H)
It’s reasonably tough, but it’s no match for an excited dog. If you camp with your dog, be sure to cover it with something. When car camping, I cover it with a quilt. When the dogs are on the trail with me, I revert to a heavier and less comfortable mattress.
I have owned and backpacked with quite a few different brands and models of lightweight sleeping pads before, but it was finally time to "go big or go home". I'm a larger framed guy, so comfort is something important to me that not many backpacking sleeping pads can provide. At 6'1" and 235 lbs, a thinner pad just won't cut it. I sleep in various positions, so being able to side sleep and even stomach sleep are very important to me.
I tried the lightest closed-cell foam pads (Z-Lite Sol to start), and it was extremely lightweight but just not enough cushion to get a full night's sleep. I could stay comfortable for maybe 1 hour on a pad like that, and then the sore spots started to show their ugly heads. In trying to keep weight at or below a pound for lightweight backpacking, I used pads such as the Klymit Static V which rolls up very small and is a rugged pad for its weight and low cost. It did the job, but I woke up frequently throughout the night to re-adjust my sore spots.
In addition, I knew the R-value was going to be a very critical issue since I sleep with a down quilt and not a traditional sleeping bag. Having that insulation beneath me where the quilt doesn't provide coverage is necessary. With the very high R-value with this pad, I know I can trust it as a 3 season pad. I knew it was time to spend some real $$ and get a pad that I knew was built for me. So I ordered this pad.
I chose the large size in the MAX rectangular configuration. I knew I was adding a solid 8 oz to my current sleep setup, but maybe the weight really was worth the comfort. I was going with a lighter tent this year, so the weight I cut from the tent went towards a more comfortable night's sleep on this pad.
When I received this pad, I immediately opened it up to test it out. I used the included inflation sack to pump it up in about 10 fills of air. I do already carry the Big Agnes Pumphouse stuff sack, so I'll be using that instead of the included inflation bag that came with this pad because the Pumphouse is lighter and also doubles as my clothes dry bag. That will save an ounce or two. This pad is HUGE... fitting my entire frame easily. My feet were still on the foot of the pad while I was able to tuck my arm under my head and keep it also on the pad. Great fit! The width is excellent for me, as I can lay on my back and my arms don't fall off of this pad. And I have broad shoulders. I laid on this pad on my back, side, and stomach and I was VERY satisfied with the support. The next thing I immediately noticed was how much body heat this pad was throwing back at me! In my living room it was very warm to lay on - far warmer than any of my other pads.
After testing, it was time to deflate it and see how easy it was to roll up and stow. Unlike some other pads I've owned, it deflated very slow on its own with the valve left open. So, I had to start rolling it from the foot end to squeeze out most of the air so I could fold it and begin rolling it up. Not a big deal, but I do like a pad that I can open the valve in the morning and let it deflate while I do other camp chores. This one goes down very slowly unless you help it along with some body weight. I spent exactly 3 minutes fully deflating, folding in 3rds, and rolling this pad back up to its packaged size (actually slightly smaller because I really pressed every last bit of air out of it. It fit great back in the provided stuff sack, with some room to spare.
Pros:
- Highest R value you can find at this weight - a true 4 season pad
- Wider and longer for us larger campers
- Comes with a bag that fits over the valve for easy pump inflation
- Material feels thicker and more durable than other lightweight inflatable pads
- Plenty of loft for side and stomach sleepers
Cons:
- It's not the lightest on the market, but it's a decent weight for its size and durability
- The valve sticks funny out of the corner of the pad, and also is hard to tuck flat when putting back into the stuff sack (observation, not complaint)
- It doesn't pack down to the "Nalgene size" that other pads do, but considering its size and warmth, is a fair compromise
- Some reviews say it's noisy (the baffles inside of the pad do make a crinkly sound) but it didn't bother me at all. May bother a tent mate.

top insulation,
light,
nice colour,
sadly my back needs a thicker mattress, so i had to give up on the lightness and solve the issue putting two pieces together to reach minimum 13cm.
