Product Description
Half air compressor - Half pump. The JoeBlow Booster pump just made it easier to install tubeless tires. This pump has an integrated aluminum air chamber that stores an air charge of one liter, up to 160psi / 11 bar, to quickly fill your tire and ensure the proper installation on a tubeless rim, just like a shop compressor. Once you flip the selector from "CHARGE" to "INFLATE" mode, air bypasses the chamber and flows directly into your tire like a standard pump. The top-mounted easy to read gauge, air release button and comfortable dual density polymer grip, combined with its extra-long hose and stable base makes mounting tubeless and standard tires a breeze!

The gauge is easy to read and the boost feature is awesome.
Great pump!
The hose is quite long (much longer than my other pump) and has niceties such as hooks to keep it arranged. The base plate is sturdy and seems sufficiently big to not have any stability problems. The hose head attached easily and the action was smooth and with ease. I don't think connecting/disconnecting lost any pressure but I would have to verify again. The head is large and I doubt would work for a shock pump.
Topeak seems to sell their devices with longevity in mind and accordingly has a large array of replacement parts listed on their site though I'm not sure if they apply to all products. It isn't clear if they have a rebuild kit for this pump or not but they do advertise replacements for a couple of the parts.
Note: This maintainability is actually a problem for a bike mechanic I know who wears out shock pumps frequently and has to replace the whole pump rather than the one o-ring which went bad. This typical manufacturer mentality is disappointing.
The gauge is a bit disappointing. My old pump gauge "sticks" and doesn't smoothly change with pressure. The smoothness of this gauge is definitely better than my other which I appreciate but the lack of finer graduations is disappointing. Tubeless users might want to distinguish between 18 and 19 PSI pressures depending on their terrain. Maybe even lower with super fat tires but I'm not as familiar with those. The gauge doesn't play well with those situations which is a pretty unfortunate for such a high quality part.
I really want to like this pump and while I think I can live without the graduations, my other pump has them and I will prefer it because of them. Therefore, this pump will either remain lightly used or I will return it. This is disappointing for such a nice pump.
To fix it, I would either make the gauge bigger, add a digital read to the analog, or switch to digital. I think the first two options are the best options and don't think I'd prefer a digital pump. Adding an upgrade option would be nice too because they offer so many parts and it might just be replaceable.
Overall:
Build quality: 5/5
Usability: 3/5
Usability without gauge: 5/5
14 months after purchase update:
The compression chamber has always worked for me and it makes tubeless setting simple. Too those who have problems with it, they may have a tricky wheel/tire combo. This works well for tires which seat easily. Perhaps a shorter or thicker hose would help by increasing the flow rate. Or some flow rate adjustment somehow.
I've grown accustomed to the gauge precision and don't mind the graduations though it bothered me at the beginning. Topeak announced a digital gauge version which would fix the precision problem.
The aluminum base plate is small and inflexible which means it really needs to be sitting on flat smooth ground. This pump is very solid and rigid feeling which contributed to this needing a flat surface. I wish the plate was bigger giving more room to stand on the gauge. I also wish it had something to make it work better on terrain which isn't perfect, whether a gasket on the ground or a little plastic. It would be nice.
The valve head doesn't work at all on Schrader valves. The site claims it does but mine doesn't. I have to use a presta adapter to pump with it. Schrader isn't difficult. Add a screw but it doesn't have one.
I find the pump gives plenty of air per stroke but I don't have super high volume tires either. I also think the force required for pumping is reasonable. If the pump output was higher volume as some have requested, I don't think my mom could use it because the force would be higher. So I find it is a good trade-off.
Overall, I consider it a high quality pump which could use a wider foot plate which works on uneven terrain and needs an improved Schrader valve attachment. Perhaps a way to adjust flow rate because some find the flow rate too low.
Overall rating: 4/5
Reliability: 5/5
Usability: 3/5 (Schrader big problem)
I love this thing!
